  	It is not generally known that the first Temperance Society of the Norwegians was organized at Muskego, on Jan. 31, 1848 at the home of Even Heg. Even Heg was elected president and his son Hans C. Heg, then a youth of 18, secretary. Bjorn was vice-president. Members pledged to abstain from liquor and to promote temperance.

  Sailed from Stravanger Norway April 7 1837 on the ship Aegir under Capt. Christian K. Behrens. The sailing from Stravanger was reported in Stravanger Adreeseavis on July 7, 1837. He held lay religious servicces in the Haugian branch of the Luthern Church at the Kendall settlement of Orleans County, New York. He returned in 1845 from America, (where he had lived for 10 years) to Norway for a visit and he persuaded his brother, Jens Olsen Hatlestad and family to emigrate to the USA. It is not generally known that the first Temperance Society of the Norwegians was organized at Muskego, on Jan 31, 1848 at the home of Even Heg. Even Heg was elected president and his son Hans C. Heg, then a youth of 18, secretary. Bjorn Hatlestad was vice-president. Members pledged to abstain from liquor and to promte temperance generally. The Muskego manifesto is an example of the colony banding together to defend America against hostile criticism in Norway. Among the signers of the document were Even Heg and Bjorn Hatlestad.
