In his will dated 19th 3mo. 1750 and proved Oct. 3 1753, Richard made bequests to his daughter Deborah, sons Richard, Daniel, and Jacob, and to his daughter-in--law Mary Wood and Sarah Powell. The two last named were in reality his step-daughters.

Richard Willets was born in 1680 at Jericho, Long Island, NY. He was a farmer and a blacksmith who lived most of his life in Secatague (later known as Islip), Suffolk County, Long Island.... Richard followed the Quaker Faith (as did all three of his wives). [from: Willett, Albert James, Jr. "The Willett Families of North America" [Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC:1985] p. 254

"Will of Richard Willets, dated March 19, 1750; probated October 3, 1753: bequest to his daughter Deborah; to: sons, Richard, Daniel, and Jacob; to: his daughter-in-law Mary Wood, and Sarah Powell (the last two are in reality his stepdaughters; the first, Mary Coles, was born on the 11th, 2d month, 1702, and married Joseph Wood in 1724 or earlier; the later, Sarah Powell was unmarried in 1750 when Richard made his will." The will, and the data on the Willets family, is obviously in error on a minor point. Both "daughter-in-laws" would have to be changed around as to their married status. His first wife had previously been married to Robert Coles. If the stepdaughters were from that union, the Coles would have been their married name. Thus, Sarah Coles must have been married to a Powell when he wrote his will, and Mary Coles would have been the unmarried stepdaughter, who later married Joseph Wood. However, so far I have found corroborating evidence that Robert Coles and had a daughter, Mary Coles, who married Joseph Wood. No where can I find supporting information that they had a daughter named Sarah. I cannot understand who the Sarah Powell was that Richard Willetts was referring to in his will. 30 Apr 2001 QLE
