    • buried Shiloh Cemetery; "Outline Guide...",p.36 cites "d. New Orleans", which would be St. Bernard County [or Parish], Louisianna. Hester Halstead Pier Ms 2000 still shows "d. 1845 New Orleans, LA"; On Wed, 12 Dec 2001 23: "Ken Erd" writes:The name of the cemetery where Alexander S. Halstead is buried I believe is "Shiloh Valley Cemetery" rather than "Shiloh Cemetery." The cemetery is in St. Clair Co., IL"
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``
      Claude Halstead's 1978 publication "My Halstead Family" lists Alexander's death at St. Clair County, Illinois; then in his 1985 joint compilation with Hester Pier, he lists the place of death as New Orleans, LA which causes a discrepancy. Hester Halstead Pier's MS 2000 continues to show Alexander's death as New Orleans , LA but with a 1845 death date. I suspect the 1845 to be a transposition of 1854, and have further investigated the burial place for Alexander. There are eight Shiloh Cemeteries shown in Illinois, plus two "Old Shiloh" and one "New Shiloh" cemeteries also located in Illinois in addition to the Shiloh Valley Cemetery at St. Clair County, Illinois; conversly, there are seven Shiloh cemteries plus a "Greater Shiloh Missionary Cemtery at Baton Rouge in Lousianna.
      However, a review of Claude's originial work reveals his comments: "There is a tombstone in Shiloh Cemetery, with a Masonic symbol for Alexander S. Halstead, Sr. William Scott Eliza's father, who died in 1870, is also buried there." I believe this leaves little doubt where Alexander is buried; however, one would probably have to examine a death certificate to determine the specific place of death. It is noted that Alexander resided in St. Clair County, IL during the 1850 census and that Eliza's father, Dr. Scott, 1 sister and 2 brothers were also living with the Halsteads at this time. And it appears that both of Alexander's sons [Hugh and Alexander Jr.] are also buried in Illinois. Thus the possible death of Alexander in New Orleans in 1854 is questionable, regarding the place of event. Apr 2003 GAH
