  • Name HALSTEAD, David Demaree
    Prefix Reverend
Birth 24 Feb 1811  New Paltz, Ulster County, New York, USA Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
    • verbal family history indicated birth at Old Faulty, Smitty, NY [in as much as his parents had moved from Warwick, Orange Co, NY to New Paltz, Ulster Co, NY and were made members of the church Apr 12, 1811 and David Demaree was born Feb 24, 1811 he is presumed to have been born at this 'new' location; Wardwell ltr 23 May 1936, p.1 - bottom para. "They [Isaac and Caroline were made members of the church at New Paltz, Ulster Co., N.Y., Apr 12, 1811." - however, an attachment on David Demaree Halstead reads: "Born in Old Raltyo, Amity County, New York, February 24, 1811 and died at Ft. Dodge, Iowa, December 3, 1887." A typewritten copy of his obituary, shared by Flo Dougherty states he [David Demaree Halstead] was born at Old Raultz, NY February 24, 1811. I find NO Old Faulty or Old Raultz, in New York, nor do I find a Amity or Smitty County in New York State.
In another typewritten document entitled GOLDEN WEDDING, and appears to be an announcement of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of the Reverend David Demaree and Betsy Millissa [Hillyer] Halstead states he was born at Amity, New York . We may never know for positive the location of David Demaree Halstead's birth..but it appears likely that New Paltz, Ulster County, NY is the proper answer. Both of his grandparents [Thomas and Pheobe Margaret [Bogardus] Halstead] lived and died in the New Paltz area

In speculating about David Demaree's middle name's origin, cousin LaDonna [Geiser] English writes: "Gary, You asked:
"was one of Caroline Linkletter Halstead's grandmothers a Damaree?" The Hardenburg book did not list her grandparents. I found no link, sorry to say. As it was, she & her parents were an 'off-shoot' paragraph from the specific Hardenburg family being written about. I felt lucky it was included or that I even found it.

In "The NJ Marriage Record, 1665-1800" compiled by Nelson, there is listed page after page of Damaree of various spellings. I feel it is ethnically Dutch, but one correspondent suggested it was French.

      Take care, cuz, LE:)"

  • Notes
    • There are two Granvilles, one in Ohio, and one in Washington County, New York. David Demaree, age five, moved west from New York in the same wagon train as the Hillyers and migrated west to Ohio 1816. Therefore, if Betsy Melissa Hillyer, was born in 1813, then she would have been about age two at this time, and would have had to have been born in Granville, Washington County, New York.
