- dau of Andrew and Sophie [Hueter] Gless; who moved with daughter to Rogers, Nebraska, when "Katie" was seven years old. Clyde and Katie lived on the old Halstead homestead 6 1/2 miles north of Rogers and had six children.

The October 16 1903 issue of the Schulyer paper The Quill reports the following under Rogers News:
On Thursday evening October 8 at pm at the home of the bride's Aunt Mrs Tucker in Davenport Iowa occurred the marriage of Clyde G. Halstead and Miss Katherine [sic]
Gless The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A Gless and until recently has resided here where she is known as a young lady of many accomplishments and who number her
friends by the host The groom is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs O B Halstead and is a young man possessed of good character and sterling habits. After ten days visit with relatives and friends in Iowa Mr and Mrs Halstead will return to this place and be at home to their friends on the farm of Mr and Mrs O B Halstead in Dublin Their many friends unite in wishjing them a long and prosperous life
*Mrs Annie Tucker was a sister to Sophia Huetter GLess and was the only member of the

to Omaha for sale at the stockyards. Andrew would feed the animals a combination of dry flour mixed in water just before they left the farm It was a common practice that would cause the Aninmals to drink a lot of water when they arrived at the stockyards and hence weigh more.
After grain crops were introdused/eastablished in sufficient acreage a hiredman was employed and lived on the farm with the family During harvest season migrant baling and
threshing crews were often hired and many brought their own equipment much like migrant
grain combiners do today.
Andrew had jersey cows for milking and herefords for beef Caroline remembered that the boys did all the outside wwoorrkk except milking the cows That was considered girls work.
The family was up at five in the morning dinner was at noon and supper was at six in the evening. Their meals consisted of vegetables meat desert coffee and milk Caroline remembered seeing as many as six or eight hogs butchered and hanging in the shed.
The girls had to trim the wiicks and clean the chimneys of the kerosene lamps one in every
room The floors had to be scrubbed clean by noon Sophia was an excellent manager and
supervised the girls with great patience All the girls had to have their hair braided [ no short
hair and their daily change of dresses by noon There was no loud or backtalk and especiallu no questioning a command by either parent. The girls also did a lot of fishing in the Platte River It was not uncommon to catch walleye and sauger as well as catfish and carp. Andrew was especially fond of carp as it was a diet staple from the Rhine River in Europe
By 1902 or 1903 it was a daily affair for Andrew to walk to Rogers and spend more and more
time in a saloon leaving all ofhe farm work for the boys. Andrew seldom did any work on the farm at all. The hard work for the young men of the family in their teen years coupled with theirdomineering and abusive father created considerable discord. Several members of the family in later years told of how badly he treated Sophia when he was drinking and that the older boys would have to take him down and sit on him till he sobered up enough to go to sleep It has been reported that Charles Joseph ran away from home when he was 15 or 16 years old about 1897 or 98 The 1901 School Census has Louis Henry listed as a dependant
with F G Halstead and in Rogers With Louis's name are the words from Buffalo, Iowa At that time he was 17 years old. F G Halstead was a local blacksmith and a brother to Clyde George Halstead who later married Katie Mary Catherine When in Blue Grass Iowa. p. 33
