In the census of 6 June 1841 at Holling Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as aged 13 born in county, the assumed son of Robert HALSTEAD.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Holling Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a Farm Labourer Carter, aged 22 born Erringden, the son of Robert HALSTEAD.3
John married Betty HOWARTH on 21 November 1857 at Halifax, Yorkshire. He was a Farmer aged 29, a bachelor residing in Sowerby. His father was listed as Robert HALSTEAD, a Farmer. After Banns. The marriage was witnessed by William CUNLIFFE and John THOMAS.4,5
His wife, Betty, died in December 1858 in the Halifax registration district.6,1 In the census of 7 April 1861 at Hollin Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as a widower, a Farmers Son, aged 32 born Erringden, the son of Robert HALSTEAD.7 In the census of 2 April 1871 at 5 Hollin Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as a widower, a Carter, aged 42 born Erringden, the son of Robert HALSTEAD.8 In the census of 3 April 1881 at Hollin Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as a widower, a Farm Servant, aged 52 born Erringden, the son of Robert HALSTEAD.9
In the census of 5 April 1891 at Hollin Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, John was listed as a widower, aged 62 born Halifax, the Head of Household; a Farmer, living with his son Charlie, daughter-in-law Margarett, grandson John William HALSTEAD.10 In the census of 31 March 1901 at 2 Nursery Lane, Halifax, Yorkshire, he was listed as a widower, a Retired Farmer, aged 72 born Erringden, the father of Charley HALSTEAD.11
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 24 Hall Bank Lane, Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, John was listed as a widower, aged 82 born Erringden, the Head of Household; a Retired Farmer, living with his son Charlie, daughter-in-law Margaret HALSTEAD (married 21 years - 4 children - 1 livng) and granddaughter Ursula Betsy HALSTEAD.12
John died on 29 November 1912, at the age of 84, and his death was registered in the Todmorden registration district.13,14

In the census of 7 April 1861 at 19 Queen Street, Todmorden, Yorkshire, he was listed as aged 2 born Sowerby, a Boarder of James BROADBENT.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 at 5 Hollin Hey, Sowerby, Yorkshire, he was listed as aged 12 born Sowerby, the grandson of Robert HALSTEAD.3
Charley married Julia Hannah GREENWOOD on 22 September 1880 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire. He was a Butcher aged 21, a bachelor residing at Hollin Hey, Mytholmroyd. His father was listed as John HALSTEAD, a Farmer. After Banns. The marriage was witnessed by Jane SUTCLIFFE and John SUTCLIFFE.4,5
