In the census of 7 April 1861 at Cross Hill, Thornhill, Yorkshire, he was listed as aged 8 born Thornhill, the son of Charlotte DUNFORD.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 at Shitlington, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a Coal Miner, aged 18 born Thornhill, a Boarder of Peter MARSDEN.3
James married Emma HALSTEAD, daughter of David HALSTEAD and Harriet THACKRAY, on 26 December 1874 at the Parish Church, Thornhill, Yorkshire. He was a Miner aged 22, a bachelor residing in Netherton. His father was not listed. After Banns. The marriage was witnessed by Luke SCHOFIELD and Eunice HALL.4,5
