In the census of 2 April 1871 at 19 Prospect Row, Altofts, Yorkshire, he was listed as a Labourer, aged 11 born Altofts, the son of Benjamin HOLSTEAD.1
Walter married Hannah Mary PEARSON on 10 November 1878 at St Saviour, Cross Green, Leeds, Yorkshire. He was a Boatman aged 19, a bachelor residing in Bridgewater Street. His father was listed as Benjamin HALSTEAD, a Boatman. After Banns. The marriage was witnessed by John CROWTHER and Sarah CROWTHER.2,3 In the census of 3 April 1881 at Penbank Bridge, Altofts, Yorkshire, he was listed as single, a Mate, aged 23 born Altofts, on the canal boat of Charles GILDERDALE, although no relationship was stated.4
