Research Note: JEWELLERY ROBBERIES AT KEIGHLEY AND LEEDS
At Keighley yesterday. Denton Halstead, slater. Bradshaw, Halifax. was charged with breaking into the pawnshop of C. H. Be11, 17, South Street, Keighleyand stealing jewellery, and Mrs. Halstead and her daughter May (18) were charged with receiving stolen goods. Supt Slack said the shop was broken into between Saturday, July 19th and Monday, the 21st, and £73 17s worth of jewellery removed. on July 29th Mrs Halstead tried to pawn in a Bradford pawnshop a gold necklet and pendant. The daughter was outside at the time. Both were handed over to Detective-Supt. Watmuff, of the Bradford City Police. Both had jewellery in their possession. and this had been identified as stolen property. At their home jewellery was found ail over the house, and under the floor of a bedroom. Evidence as to articles being pawned was given and Frederick Mardon, manager of a Leeds firm of pawnbrokers, identified jewellery stolen from their Kirkstall Road shop in April, when £103 worth of stock was taken. When arrested Halstead said he had bought all the jewellery from a brother. Defendants were committed to the Sessions for trial, bail being accepted.4

TWO BROTHERS AND ANOTHER MAN COMMITTED TO SESSIONS.
A story of a detective's watch on an hotel during Saturday night was related at Fleetwood, this morning, when two brothers. Maurice and Milton Halstead, of Bradford, were charged -with burglariously entering the Queen's Hotel, Fleetwood, and stealing three bottles of whisky, two of sherry, and one of tonic, total value £2 11s. 6d., the property of T. T. Wilde.
Superintendent Crapper said Detective-Sergeant Berry kept watch on the hotel, and at 2.30 a.m. on Sunday morning saw the two accused enter the yard, lift the door to the cellar, and enter. When the sergeant went into the cellar he found Maurice crouching under the stairs and Milton was hiding in the gantry. Maurice said, I may well tell the truth. We came for some whiskv. This is not the first time. I was down last week-end with another man. but my brother had nothing to do with that.”
The magistrates committed both accused for trial at the next Preston Sessions.3

YOUNG MAN FOUND DRUNK ON FARM.
At Preston Sessions, this morning, Maurice Halstead (22), slater, and Harry Ashton (22), labourer, jointly charged with burglariously breaking and entering the Queen’s Hotel, Poulton-road, Fleetwood, on March 28th, and stealing six half-bottles of whisky, pleaded guilty. Maurice Halstead was further charged, together with Milton Halstead (21), collier, with breaking into the same hotel and stealing whisky and sherry. In this case, also, both accused pleaded guilty.—Mr. Stanley said Ashton was found on a farm at Fleetwood on the 29th March in a hopeless state of drunkenness, and four empty whisky bottles were found near him. On April 3rd stocktaking at the hotel revealed six half-bottles of whisky were missing.

D.S. Berry saw Ashton at the farm on the following day, and this prisoner said: "I may as well make clean breast of it. I went into the cellar and got the wnisky. I have been a fool." In regard to the other offence prisoners were found the cellar with the stolen property in their possession. D.S. Berry stated that Maurice Halstead, who belonged to Halifax, came out of a Borstal institution 12 months ago, and had done no work since. Milton Halstead, who had been on a term of probation, had been going about with his brother Maurice Ashton was a native cf Accrington. He had made efforts to obtain work. He first met the Halsteads at a sailors’ mission, and had roamed about with them.

Maurice Halstead, whom the Chairman said must accept responsibility in these cases, was sent down for nine months’ hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. The other two accused were bound over for 12 months.4 Maurice HALSTEAD appeared on the 1939Register taken on 29 September 1939 in the household of Denton HALSTEAD at [L.] He was single, a Slaterer and Plasterer, born 14 April 1902.5
Maurice's death was registered in 1968 in the Halifax registration district.6

TWO BROTHERS AND ANOTHER MAN COMMITTED TO SESSIONS.
A story of a detective's watch on an hotel during Saturday night was related at Fleetwood, this morning, when two brothers. Maurice and Milton Halstead, of Bradford, were charged -with burglariously entering the Queen's Hotel, Fleetwood, and stealing three bottles of whisky, two of sherry, and one of tonic, total value £2 11s. 6d., the property of T. T. Wilde.
Superintendent Crapper said Detective-Sergeant Berry kept watch on the hotel, and at 2.30 a.m. on Sunday morning saw the two accused enter the yard, lift the door to the cellar, and enter. When the sergeant went into the cellar he found Maurice crouching under the stairs and Milton was hiding in the gantry. Maurice said, I may well tell the truth. We came for some whiskv. This is not the first time. I was down last week-end with another man. but my brother had nothing to do with that.”
The magistrates committed both accused for trial at the next Preston Sessions.3
