The Rev. W. M. V. Gregory read prayers in the house, church and graveside. Mr. Starkie was well known and highly respected in the district, and is survived by a widow and a grown-up family. SAD MATRIMONIAL STORY FROM NELSON.
On Saturday, at Nelson, Mr. F. Roberts, solicitor, applied on behalf of Ellen Ann Halstead for a separation order against her husband, Holgate Halstead, a weaver, residing in Rook-street, Nelson. Mr. Baldwin represented defendant. The parties, who are 26 and 24 respectively, were married two years ago.
Complainant stated that defendant struck her continually and had also kicked her. On one occasion she had to seek medical assistance on account of his violence, and in August he nearly strangled her because she asked him to do some work.
A neighbour said she had given Mrs. Halstead food "for pity’s sake.”
Defendant said he had never denied his wife anything in the shape of food or clothes. He had given her all his wages, and she had called him lazy and said he would have to "addle” more.
Mr. Baldwin contended that it was question between a sober husband and an unthrifty wife.
The Bench granted a separation order carrying 10s. a week, but advised the couple to make matters up.⁶ He travelled to Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America, in 1904. Also has a US Army draft registration card for 1918. This confirms his wifes details in Nelson, Lancashire.

Sad circumstances surrounded the death of Mrs. Ann Riley, 48 years of age. 31, Haydock Street, Burnley, wife of Thomas Henry Riley, a coal miner. She had enjoyed fairly good health up to five or six weeks ago, since when she had suffered from bronchitis. She had continued to do her housework as usual. Her son, who in the army, and who lives in the Barden Lane district, was expected home,on Monday, and she: went to his house to. see him. Mrs. Catlow, who resides 209. Barden Lane, saw Mrs. Riley seated on the ground, and finding her to be ill, took her into her shop, and summonded P.C. Wood, who requisitioned the motor ambulance and had the woman removed to the Victoria Hospital. . On arrival there the doctor pronounced life extinct.
At the inquest on Wednesday the Coroner found that the deceased died from heart failure consequent on bronchitis.¹⁰ Ann was buried on 8 March 1919 at Wheatley Lane Inghamite, Fence, Lancashire, England.⁹ Her estate was given Letters of Administration on 28 March 1919 at London, England. On Friday, the death occurred of Mr. Joseph Halstead, aged eighty-one years, of Greenfield Locks, Barrowford. He was a native of the village, and was born at Royal Oak Cottages, Pasture Row, and formerly resided at 6, Queen Street, Barrowford, Mr. Halstead worked for over thirty years at R. Berry's Victoria Mills up to his seventy third year, and he was well-known as an angler and took an interest in homing birds. He was also one of the best draughts player in the locality. The interment took place on Tuesday afternoon, at St. Mary’s Church, Newchurch-in-Pendle. The Rev. H. Stratton officiated at the deceased’s residence and the church.

On Thursday afternoon an inquiry was held at Barrowford touching the death of the young man, Manfred Halstead, a stoker, who was found battered almost to a pulp at Albert Mill, Barrowford, on Tuesday. Inquiries were addressed to the witnesses with a view to ascertaining whether the young man had committed suicide, so well is the machinery protected. However, the jury were satisfied that Halstead was of an inquiring mind, and had promised to read an essay on " Steam " that evening. Whilst examining the engine he was caught by the crank and drawn in, and thus met his death accidentally.⁵

An esteemed resident, Mrs. Dora Quant, passed away on Tuesday at her home. Lower Laneside Farm, Lnmb. She had been ill about five weeks and was 58 years of age. Mrs. Quant was a native of Barrowford, but came to reside at Lumb from Colne. She had been a worshipper at Providence Baptist Church, and was a member of the Ladies’ Guild. A husband and married son and daughter are left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Saturday at Newchurch-in-Pendle. NELSON OLD LADY KILLED
Another tragedy has taken place at Hardplatt'a level crossing at Nelson, the scene of several fatalities. The latest victim is Ellen Halstead (77). who with her sister, Martha Halstead, at 5, Edge End Cottages, Nelson, and on Wednesday afternoon they left home together to go shopping. Deceased, as she was crowing the line, was knocked down by the Colne to Burnley motor train, sustaining terrible injuries, whilst her sister had a miraculous escape. The inquest was held on Thursday, at the Nelson Town Hall, being conducted the East Lancashire Coroner (Mr. D. N. Haslewood). Martha Halstead, spinster, 5, Edge End Cottages, Nelson, sister of the deceased, said her sister was the widow of Hartley Halstead, farmer. She had good hearing and had fairly good eyesight when wearing her spectacles. Deceased had enjoyed good health for the last four years, with the exception that she was in motor collision about 18 months ago. She then sustained a splintered rib, for which she was medically attended. At 1-30 p.m. the previous day deceased and witness left home, shopping Nelson, proceeding way Hardplatl's level crossing to get into Manchester road. At 1-45 p.m. they had got through the wicket-gate at the crossing and met Samuel Heyes, whom deceased knew. After speaking a few words to him they left him and proceeded to cross over the other side of the railway. Deceased was a few yards in front of witness when all once a train came rushing between them. Witness managed to step back and avoided being knocked down. After the tram had gone she looked for her sister, expecting to see her the other side waiting for her. Failing to see her she looked down the line and saw her lying between the metals. She was dead. Witness never saw the train coming, nor did she hear the engine whistle. Samuel Heyes, 240. Manchester-road, Nelson, painter and decorator, said that 1-45 p.m. yesterday he was having a walk between Manchester-road and Edge End. He had crossed Hardplatts level crossing when saw deceased and her sister, whom he knew. They were coming through the wicket-gate on the opposite side. Witness spoke to them as they were passing. As he was passing through the gate he heard the engine of the train whistle, and turning round saw deceased, who was about to step on the line. He shouted to her to come back, but he was too late as the train was on the top of her and she was knocked down. The train came to a stop a very short distance away. He went to the deceased and found her lying with her head in the four-foot and her feet in the "sixfoot." Witness found that she was dead. The Coroner: None of you seemed be aware that the train was approaching?—I hadn't the idea. The driver was whistling when got close the crossing. She practically stepped straight into the front of the train?— Yes, and it carried her about 20 yards. John Harry Bentley, 457, Burnley-road, Colne, engine driver, of the L.M.S. Railway Company, said that 1-45 p.m. the previous day he was working the motor train from Colne to Burnley and travelling between Nelson and Brierfield at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. Approaching Hardplatts level crossing he saw two ladies and a man in conversation at the crossing and inside the wicketgate. He blew the whistle for the crossing according to the railway regulations. He then noticed that the ladies made a move as if to cross the railway line. They had their backs the train, and Guard Shenton, who was in the same compartment, commenced to sound the whistle and did so continually to the crossing. Witness applied the brakes, but was unable to pull up before one the ladies was struck by the gangway which stands out from off the buffers about a foot. He stopped the train about 20 yards past the crossing. The guard and wittness got down and found deceased lying dead, partly in the "four-foot" and partly in the "six-foot." The Coroner: You could not do any more than you did to avoid the accident?— Unfortunately not, sir. Answering further questions, witness stated that the point where the accident took place there was a straight run of about 80 yards. The woman stepped right into the front the tram just like a man stepping off the footpath in front of a motor car. The Coroner : We can always be wise after the event, but it was not wise to stop talking at a railway crossing?—No, George Shenton, 5, Penrith-road, Colne, railway guard, gave similar evidence, and added that the lady started to cross the line when the train would only be about six yards away. He sounded the whistle, but failed to draw deceased's attention. The Coroner : Was everything done possible to prevent the accident?— Yes. Did the train go over her?— Yes, the whole engine and train passed over her and she sustained terrible injuries. The Coroner described it as an unfortunate accident, but added that there seemed to have been a lark carefullness on the part of the deceased. It seemed to him to be foolish to start a conversation at a level crossing, especially inside a wickct-gate. He did not suppose that deceased ever saw the train, and it appeared a case of deceased having stepped in front of the train and being knocked down. Unfortunately she had lost her life. A verdict of Accidental death was returned.¹⁵

At the police court, on Monday, Jack Halstead, weaver, now of Burnley, was summoned by his wife, Minnie L. Halstead, 24, Maple-street, for persistent cruelty. Defendant did not appear.— Complainant stated that she was married the defendant in 1906 and there were four children. Her husband had been cruel to her all her married life and she had taken proceedings against him previously. On: the 12th December her husband returned home drunk and turned them all out, threatening set the house on fire. Her husband had an Army pension of 28s per week and 8s. of that amount was for her and her two young children. She thought that he could pay her that 8s. and add another 7s to it, making 15s. in all.—The Chairman (Alderman White) said the Bench would grant her a maintenance order of 18s. per week —10s in addition to the pension award.⁹

Nelson Weaver Found Drowned at Barrowford
At an inquest at Nelson, on Thursday, on the body of Wm. Leach Halstead (56), weaver, who was found drowned in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal the previous day, a verdict of "Found drowned" was returned. Robert Halstead, brother of the deceased, said the latter had been in failing health and had not worked for about 18 months. Witness last saw him three weeks ago, when he was an inmate of the Burnley Workhouse. A witness named Edward Stinchon, of Barrowford, spoke to seeing Halstead at Park Hill, Barrowford, at 10-30 on the night of Sept. 3, walking in the direction of Nelson. He turned on the canal bank, which he would have to cross to reach Nelson. Mrs. Taylor, manageress of the Marlborough Hostel, said Halstead, who had lodged at the hostel, had recently been in poor health. On Sept. 3 he appeared to be very strange in his manner. The Coroner said that from the evidence he would not be justified in returning a verdict of suicide or accidental death.¹⁰
