Newspaper Report: EWELL FEARFUL EXPLOSION AT A POWDER MILL
An explosion, unfortunately attended with loss of life occurred on Wednesday morning about five minutes to 11, at the Ewell Powder Mills, belonging to Messrs. Sharpe and Co. As soon as possible the inhabitants rushed to the works, which are about a mile from the village, and it was ascertained that about half a ton of powder had exploded in the corning house, where it undergoes the granulating process. Two men, Layton Osborne and Raymond Mitchell, were engaged superintending the machinery, whilst Benjamin Osborne, brother to the first named, was in the boat which had just brought the powder to the corning house, and was in the act of pushing off for the purpose of bringing another supply. As usual in most cases of this nature, no cause can be ascertained to account for the igniting of the powder The injuries sustained by Layton Osborne were of so serious a nature that he survived but three hours- Dr. Daniel and Dr. Barnes, who were early on the spot, did all in their power to alleviate his sufferings. He was terribly scorched, his arm blown away between the wrist and elbow, and every particle of his clothing hanging in strips, and those which did adhere were on lire. The poor fellow recognised his distracted wife, and likewise the Rev. .J. Salwey, whose gentle ministrations visibly affected all around. As soon as possible Mitchell was conveyed to his home, where he lies in a hopeless and delirious state, owing to the severe injuries received. Benjamin Osborne, who was in the boat, attributes his escape to being blown into the stream, where the splinters, machinery, &c, were showered upon him. Too much praise cannot accorded to the Rev. J. Salwey and Mr. Tom Stone, who did all in their power to alleviate the distress so suddenly brought about. Osborne leaves wife and one child, whilst Mitchell, who is reported to dead, has four children, which will shortly be added to. The last explosion that occurred at these works was about seven years ago, when the loss of life was much greater than on the present occasion. We are informed no works are more carefully supervised and guarded against probable accident than these, all the men employed having the greatest confidence in the management of Mr. Johnson, the Superintendent.
An inquest was held on Friday before W. Carter, Esq.. Coroner for the district, on the bodies of Layton Osborn and Raymond Mitchell, the two unfortunate men who were killed in the late explosion at the Ewell Powder Mills. Mr. George Stone was selected foreman of the Jury.
James Wagstaffe, was the first witness called, he deposed :—I am Sergeant of Police, Epsom, On Wednesday last was on duty in Epsom. I heard a slight explosion in the direction of Ewell Powder Mills, and saw the smoke arise. I instantly went to the mills of Mr. John Carr Sharpe. I saw the deceased, Layton Osborn, in a shed on the premises, he was then alive, but terribly injured, his left arm blown off, and left leg shattered and burnt, and burnt all over his body. He was still sensible, but made no allusion to the cause of accident. He died in my presence at quarter past two the same day.
W. Mitchell, sworn:- I am a powder maker, and work in the dust-house. I knew both of the deceased perfectly well, they were both powder makers. Raymond Mitchell died last night in my presence at his own home about 11 o’clock. They have worked for Mr. Sharpe for 10 or 11 years. I saw the men bringing Mitchell, who is my brother, from the Corning House, which had exploded. I saw him about half-an-hour previous, he was then in good health, so was Osborn, and both were perfectly sober. I asked my brother if he could tell me the cause of the explosion, he replied he could not. I was in the corning house removing an empty tub, whilst Osborn was cracking down the cakes. William Clement Daniel deposed — l am a surgeon in practice residing at Epsom. On Wednesday last I was in the village of Ewell, and heard the explosion at the mills. I immediately proceeded there, and saw both men. Ostorn I knew, and was the first I saw. He was charred all over his right arm, his right arm blown off near his shoulder, and his left leg shattered at the thigh and ancle. I believe his spine was fractured. He was sensible; did not speak in my hearing as to the cause of the explosion. I never expected he could servive. I did all that was possible to relieve him. He lived about three hours, the injuries he had received being the cause of death. I then saw Mitchell in a shed; he was burnt nearly all over the body, and had a deep wound inside his left thigh, which appeared to have been caused a jagged piece of wood. it was four inches long, and deep among the muscles. The femoral artery was uninjured. He had also a wound over the left eye. I saw him twice Wednesday, and once yesterday. He seemed more cheerful the last time I saw him, but his breathing became worse. I did not think he would recover, and he died last night. There can be no doubt his death resulted from the injuries he had received.
At this state of the proceedings, the Coroner suggested that it would better to adjourn until Thursday next, that the man Benjamin Osborn, now lying ill, might be examined, and possibly would able to throw some light on the cause of the explosion.—Adjourned accordingly.4
His wife, Annet, died on 1 October 1871 at Ewell, Surrey, England.5
William died on 20 October 1880 at Ewell, Surrey.6

The Corning House was blown up at 11 am."8

Appears in a newspaper article on on 5 November 1870 at at London, England, The inquiry into the causes of the explosion at the Ewell powder mills concluded yesterday when the jury found that the two deceased, Leighton Osborne and Raymond Mitchell, were accidentally killed. George Dunnett, foreman at the mill, said he saw Mitchell after the explosion occurred; he was sensible, and told witness voluntarily the rollers were going and the cake cracking down when it went off. He asked Mitchell if anything gave way, and he replied '* No.” He could not explain the cause of the explosion. The coroner said there could be no doubt that the unfortunate occurrence was the result of accident, and not brought about by malice or carelessness in the management of the works. The plant and machinery at these mills are of a duplicate nature, so that the works are not stopped owing to this explosion. The jury presented their fees to the suffering families.7

£3,750 DAMAGES FOR WIDOW
A settlement under which a young London widow and her infant son. born after his father was fatally injured in a car smash, will receive damages totalling £3,750, was announced yesterday at Berkshire Assizes at Reading.
Two motorists, Gerald Anthony Stedall, described as of independent means, of The Studio, Shiplake, near Henley-on-Thames, and William John Jones, a clayworker, of Elm Park Road, Reading, were sued by Mrs. Dorothy Sprackling, of Herne Hill. London.

Mr. Justice Hawke.—She has suffered, poor creature, in a way for which she cannot get any damages.
