     Research Note: Whlist his birth certificate states that his name was Socrates Urquhart he is clearly on the census with the family in 1871 and 1881 as David. We can only assume at this point in time that it was the family name for him.
Socrates Urquhart HOLSTEAD was born on 23 July 1861 at Daubhill, Rumworth, Lancashire.1,2 He was the son of Thomas HOLSTEAD and Anne HOLLOWS. In the census of 2 April 1871 at Daubhill, Rumworth, Lancashire, he was listed as aged 9 born Runworth, the son of Thomas HOLSTEAD.3 In the census of 3 April 1881 at 46 St Helens Road, Rumworth, Lancashire, he was listed as single, an Operative Cotton Spinner, aged 19 born Rumworth, the son of Thomas HOLSTEAD.4
Socrates married Sarah GRIMSHAW in 1885 at St Paul, Deansgate, Bolton, Lancashire.5
