John HALSTEAD was born in 1838 at Briercliffe, Lancashire. He was the son of Henry HALSTEAD and Mary HOWARTH. In the census of 6 June 1841 at Whindle House, Briercliffe with Extwistle, Lancashire, he was listed as aged 3 born in county, the assumed son of Henry HALSTEAD.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 2 Union Court, Burnley, Lancashire, he was listed as a Cotton Doffer, aged 13 born Briercliffe, the son of Mary HALSTEAD.2
