110817 | [[m. date projected on 1st born & place - Seversmith says of son Samuel, he was "of Goshen, NY and Nicholson, PA - it appears the family migrated to Nicholson ca 1786 - see "First Settlements" Wyoming County Historical Society of Tunkhannock, PA]; 26 Jan 2001 e-mail to Ben & John P.: "In reviewing my data that I have "so dutifully" input from Seversmith's ms, I assigned the children, as instructed on p.1, 242 to Isaiah and 1st wife Mariam - - - "m.1-Mariam Harding...died in Dec. 1762";"Issue by first wife" [but ALL, save Samuel who was b. 7 Dec 1762, of the children are shown as born after the death of 1st wife Mariam] - - - I've searched my copies of Seversmith's Supplements, to see if this issue was addressed, to no avail. If this issue has not been addressed, either by Seversmith or Hester...than I believe it is one we must attempt to resolve. Did Mariam live longer than shown; or is Samuel the only child of Isaiah and Mariam, and the balance, the children of Isaiah and 2nd spouse Jemima? Possibly you or John P. Halstead already have the answer. Comments? Cousin Gary Gary, I do not know the answer to the question. I do note that Mariam is reported as dying in December 1762, and Samuel is reported as being born 7 December 1762. Could Mariam have died in childbirth? I did note a note I made on the page, Re: Ralph Johnson (Lektrol@aol.com), but I cannot decipher what the note says. Maybe Ralph can help. Best always, Ben Halsted, Abilene, Texas Gary, If Marium died in 1762, only the first child obviously could have been hers, but if Jemima was born in 1756, the next 3 or 4 children could hardly have been hers. There's something screwy here somewhere, and I don't know the answer. Hester's ms. (p.11) does not clarify the situation. John msg 30 Jan 2001 to Ralph: " I posed the following query to Ben and John in hopes one or the other may have the answer - - - Ben suggests in his response that you may be able to assist me in clarifying this quandary...I've pasted Ben & John's responses below my original message for your benefit. Any help you might render would be appreciated. Gary e-mail response from Geo Halstead 4 Feb 2001:Claude Halstead told me this was from a newspaper & found in a black binder of newspaper articles - someone had been going thru old newspapers and copying & putting in a binder. Wyoming Historical Society in Tunkhannock,Pa. 13657 was where he found it. The article is FIRST SETTLEMENTS (continued) and typewritten at the top of the page is 23 April 1976. It starts out "Isaiah Halsted and his family came to Nicholson either with the Stephenses or very soon after for they declared that they were in Nicholson at the time of the famous "Pumpkin Flood" in 1786 and that they had lost their cabin, some cattle and most of their possessions. They had settled on the Tunkhannock Creek, just west of the Stephens land, near the "Fair Ground Bridge." After the flood, he rebuild on the site of the present home of Mrs Marjorie (Stevens) Kenyon. Here Isaiah Halsted, his son, Samuel and grandson, Elemuel Halsted spent their lives. Farther into the article is this information on Samuel Halsted. Isaiah Halsted had a wife, Miriam (surname not found) who was born January 7, 1744. She was the mother of Samuel Halsted born December 7, 1761 in Orange County, N.Y. Miriam must have died soon after the birth of Samuel, for Joseph and Micah Halsted were called the half-brothers of Samuel, by the late Attorney O. Smith Kinner, of Tunkhannock. I would be glad to mail you a copy of this article. Zee ( for Ralph) | Family: HALSTEAD, Isaiah [5] / HARDING, Mariam - 1st wife - (F520)
