Howard F. Matlock
SCOTTSBLUFF - Howard F. Matlock, 85, of Scottsbluff, died March 9, 2001 at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff. His funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Reverend Bret Rickard officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery with military honors by Admiral Dewey Post No. 1681 V.F.W. Visitation will be from 1p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and 9a.m to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church in Scottsbluff or the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Howard’s memory.
He was born November 15, 1915 in Kimball, Nebraska, the son of LeRoy and Mabel (Parris) Matlock. The family moved to the Scottsbluff-Gering area in 1923. He attended Gering schools, later receiving his GED as part of a veterans program. He worked for C.C.C. helping to build the road and tunnels for the Scottsbluff National Monument. He joined the National Guard and was called to active duty on June 13, 1941. He served with the Army Air Force overseas during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 10, 1945 attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He worked for the telephone company for a time and was a maintenance man for various schools and St. Mary’s Hospital. He was employed by the city of Scottsbluff in the parks department as a zookeeper until his retirement.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scottsbluff, the American Legion, a life time member of the VFW and DAV, and had served as state president of the War Dads. He devoted many hours in parades and memorial services until his health no longer permitted it.
He married Ruth Watson in Alliance. On November 1, 1968 he married Lucille Halstead in Torrington, WY. The couple resided in Scottsbluff.
He is survived by his wife Lucille, of Scottsbluff; stepsons Larry Halstead, of Denver, Colo., Tom Watson and wife Bev, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Gene Watson and special friend Ellyn, of Mesa, Arizona; step-son-in-law Bill Chamber, of Dublin, Ohio; six step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; sister Marvel Fredenberg, of Gurley; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Wayne Cashler, of Harrisburg; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, five brothers, two sisters, step-daughter, and step-daughter-in-law.
