- Note from George Halstead 31 Dec 2004: "I do not believe that the Eliza Jane that lived in Santa Barbara is the same Eliza Jane that married Humphrey. Below are pictures of the two ladies. Humphrey and the Halstead's from Visalia did go to the coast to escape hot San Joaquin Valley summers, but they went to Santa Cruz. All notes and records that I have found (I have their land records) indicate they lived on his farm. They also owned some land in the foothills northeast of Visalia. By the way, Humphrey's Eliza Jane was a Denend. The Halsteads also married a Sara Denend, Eliza's sister, and an Alice Denend. It is likely the Denend was actually Denning."
