- Leon "Lee Hall" Halstead, 69, of Gering, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the Western Regional Hospital Center, Oncology Unit in Scottsbluff after a lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28 at the YMCA Trails West Camp Retreat Center in Riverside Park in Scottsbluff.
Memorials may be given to the Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff and Western Regional Hospital Oncology Unit.
He was born Dec. 22, 1936, in Wagner, S.D. to Gerard and Iva (Piroutek) Halstead. Leon grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D., graduating from South Dakota State University with a B.S. degree in Botany. He started his lengthy radio career at the college radio station.
In 1960 he worked at KOLT in Scottsbluff, and was Manager at KCSR, Chadron in 1973. He bought KPNY radio in 1988, which he operated until his death; the staff at KPNY was like family.
Leon was the president of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association in 1975 and he also served on the board of the Riverside Zoo for many years.
Survivors include his children and grandchildren, Jerry (Faith) Halstead of Lebanon, N.H.; Laura (Kirk) Norman, Garrett and Christopher of Lander, Wyo.; Christopher (Becky) Halstead, Jacob, Chelsea, Chance, Madalyne, and Cooper of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Ryan Halstead of Durango, Colo.; and Leslie (Ackim) Nyachikanda, Marley of Farmington, N.M.; sister, Marlene (Art) Hagen of Torrington, Wyo.; special friend, Zandy Knotts of Scottsbluff; long time co-workers and friends, Adell Duran and Mel Sauer; nieces and nephews, Sandy Hagen of Scottsbluff; Danette (Steve) Dunker of Chadron; Gigi (Kelly) Asseling of Kearney; Merle (Connie) Hagen of Scottsbluff and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brother Stuart.
