The funeral of Mrs. Ansley Sinden 3, Stockton Cottages, The Ridge, took place on Monday at the Borough Cemetery, the Rev. Dr. James Morgan offlciating.

Newspaper Report: The Complicated Case.-At the Chichester County Petty Sessions on Saturday, before Mr. J. J. Johnson, Q.C. (Chairman), the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, K. G., Admiral Hornby, General Hardy, C. B., Captain Podmore, Dr. Tyaeke, and Mr. C. L. Teesdale, Edward Glue and Leonard Halsted were summoned for being drunk and riotous in the highway at Bersted on the 6th December.— Mr. Janman defended Halsted. It will be remembered that the case was adjourned for the purpose of allowing both sides to secure additional evidence.—P.C. Dennis Faith, stationed at Pagham, stated in addition to his previous depositions that Mr. Bailey, the landlord of the Royal Oak Inn, asked him on the sale day remain in the vicinity of his house as he thought there was likely to be some disturbance towards the evening. Cross-examined by Mr. Janman, he said he did not tell this to the Bench before because he did not recollect it. He served a subpoena on Bailey between three and four o’clock on the 23rd December, and would swear that he was not in the house more than half-an-hour, during which time he waited for Bailey coming home.—Walter Halsted, bricklayer, of South Bersted, and cousin to the defendant Halsted, deposed that on the evening of the 6th December he went Into the Royal Oak Inn between eight and nine o'clock. He was in the bar and saw the two defendants in the parlour. At turning-out time he heard a disturbance, and going outside he heard P.C. Faith telling the defendants to go home quietly. Glue said he would go home when he was ready, and was in a state anything but sober.â??The Chairman : What do you mean by that ?â??Witness: He was drunk. Halsted, he continued, was no better in his condition than Glue. Faith told Halsted to go away, and the former replied that the road was as much for him It was for the constable. The defendant Halsted's mother then came out of the house on the other side of the road, and there was more noise than ever (laughter). In his opinion the defendants would have gone away quietly but for this woman who was drunk as she could be with her hair hanging down over her shoulders. She made more noise than the two defendants did together (laughter). Halsted and Faith closed, and both fell down, and in the struggle the former’s jacket was very much torn. Witness did not observe any blows struck; he heard something said about "??old Cobb," but did not recollect who said it.â??Thomas Halsted, of North Bersted, uncle of the defendant Halsted, said that he saw both defendants drunk on the evening In question. He also saw a scrimmage between his nephew and Faith, but did not know how it originated because, although it was a moonlight night, they were under a quick-set hedge. He heard no threats used. Cross-examined, he said there had been sale a at his late father’s house that day, and he was called up out of bed the same night by Faith, with whom he went the house, where his sister and her son (the defendant Halsted) were living and had lived nearly all their lives. He did not have possession of the house nor did he intend to claim it. He supposed his father died Intestate ; at any rate he (witness) took out letters of administration. If It was necessary he could say a great deal about his relations with his sister.—The Chairman could not see what letters of administration had do with the case.—Witness, continuing, said he went to the Royal Oak Inn to have three-pennyworth of whisky, to which he thought himself entitled after being summoned out of his warm bed. and it was possible the constable (Faith) might have followed him there, but he did not go with him.-They talked together In the passage of the public-house, but talking was not drinking.- The defendant Halsted produced the coat which he alleged was torn by Faith, and it certainly had the appearance of having been harshly used.-Arthur White, labourer of North Bersted, called for the defence, deposed that he left the Royal Oak at closing time, and saw Faith take hold of Glue and shave him down on the road. Both defendants were sober as far as he could observe. Halsted and Faith commenced to struggle, and the latter fell down ; both of them fell shortly afterwards. No threats were used, and nobody attempted to fight except Faith.-Edward Bailey, landlord of the Royal Oak Inn, North Bersted, said that no disturbance took place in his house on the evening of the 6th December, and he knew nothing of what happened outside after closing time. He did tell Glue, who was not drunk, to get out of the house and not come in again because the latter said a few words to him at the door on going out.-The Bench decided that there was not shadow of a doubt that the defendants were drunk and riotous and fined them each ten shillings and costs, and to pay between them the expenses of the witnesses for the prosecution. Halsted was ordered to pay the costs of the witnesses for the defence.-The latter defendant was fined for drunkenness in 1884.¹⁰

It will be remembered that the case was adjourned for the purpose of allowing both sides to secure additional evidence.—P.C. Dennis Faith, stationed at Pagham, stated in addition to his previous depositions that Mr. Bailey, the landlord of the Royal Oak Inn, asked him on the sale day remain in the vicinity of his house as he thought there was likely to be some disturbance towards the evening. Cross-examined by Mr. Janman, he said he did not tell this to the Bench before because he did not recollect it. He served a subpoena on Bailey between three and four o’clock on the 23rd December, and would swear that he was not in the house more than half-an-hour, during which time he waited for Bailey coming home.—Walter Halsted, bricklayer, of South Bersted, and cousin to the defendant Halsted, deposed that on the evening of the 6th December he went Into the Royal Oak Inn between eight and nine o'clock. He was in the bar and saw the two defendants in the parlour. At turning-out time he heard a disturbance, and going outside he heard P.C. Faith telling the defendants to go home quietly. Glue said he would go home when he was ready, and was in a state anything but sober.â??The Chairman : What do you mean by that ?â??Witness: He was drunk. Halsted, he continued, was no better in his condition than Glue. Faith told Halsted to go away, and the former replied that the road was as much for him It was for the constable. Both defendants were sober as far as he could observe. Halsted and Faith commenced to struggle, and the latter fell down ; both of them fell shortly afterwards. No threats were used, and nobody attempted to fight except Faith.-Edward Bailey, landlord of the Royal Oak Inn, North Bersted, said that no disturbance took place in his house on the evening of the 6th December, and he knew nothing of what happened outside after closing time.
