Nicholas WALSH was born in 1870 at Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, England.
Appears in a newspaper article on on 9 January 1903 at at Lancashire, England, FATAL LAMP EXPLOSION AT CHURCH
INVALID WIDOW’S TRAGIC DEATH
DISCLOSURES AT THE INQUEST
An inquest was held in Church Courthouse, on Thursday evening, touching the death of Harriet Walsh, widow, aged 63 years, 2, off Water-street, Church.
Nicholas Walsh, son of deceased, said his mother had a fainting attack Monday, and had not been well since. She got up a little on Tuesday. Witness did not see her at all on Wednesday.—Mrs. Smith, a neighbour, said deceased knocked for her about nine o'clock on Wednesday morning. Witness went in and lighted the fire for her, as she seemed very poorly, and afterwards helped her back to bed. Deceased’s granddaughter looked after her during the day, and about 4.45 witness took her some tea and bread, which she placed on a table near the bed. Witness then, the request of deceased, lighted the lamp, which she put on the same table as the tea things. It was a small, three-legged table, and witness placed the lamp in the centre. After this witness went out for short time, and on returning to put the kettle on the fire, the deceased called out, Mary, come here; tha’rt too late.” Witness went upstairs, and saw deceased between two beds enveloped flames. She ran out for help.
James Walsh, an aged man, 12, Wade-street, said he heard an alarm of fire, and ran to the house of deceased. He went upstairs, but could not get to the woman at first, the bed« were on fire, and the room was full of smoke. He got some buckets of water, and succeeded in putting out the flames. He then found the woman on the floor, apparently dead, between the two beds. Her nightdress was destroyed. and her body was badly burnt. About a quarter of an hour elapsed before could get to the woman. A table was standing beside a bed, and the lamp was on it, but it was not burning. It might, however, have been extinguished by the smoke. The lamp glass was partly on the table and partly on the floor. A piece of glass had gone out of the reservoir of the lamp. He could not tell how the lamp got broken, unless deceased had knocked against it.
The Coroner, after examining the lamp, said he was of opinion that the accident was due to a lamp explosion, and a verdict was returned that "deceased was burnt to death, probably by the explosion of a paraffin lamp."1
Nicholas married Sarah Ann HALSTEAD, daughter of Walter HALSTEAD and Alice Ann WOOD, in 1903 at St James Church Kirk, Church, Lancashire, England.2
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 9 Lion Street, Church, Lancashire, England, Nicholas was listed as aged 41 born Oswaldtwistle, the Head of Household; a Labourer in Calico Print Works, living with his wife Sarah Ann, son Joseph.3
