On Wednesday last, a weaver, named Charles Halstead, who has for some time past been suffering from paralysis, which created much mental despondency, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. In the morning of the day named, Mrs. Sinclair heard a noise as of some one shouting in the deceased's house, Paradise Court, Back Hampton-street, Salford, and on entering to learn the cause, she saw the deceased standing near a kitchen table, in the act of putting into the drawer of it a razor. As she approached him, he fell into her arms, and died immediately, having inflicted a fatal gash in his throat. An inquest was held on the body the same day, at the Bridge Inn, Broughton Road, before the deputy coroner, when evidence was adduced that the deceased was afflicted mentally as well as bodily, and a verdict to the effect that he had destroyed himself whilst labouring under insanity was returned.^5,6
