His wife, Sarah, died in 1852 at Dukinfield, Cheshire, England.4

Appears in a newspaper article on on 18 January 1858 at at Dukinfield, Cheshire, SEDUCTION AND SUICIDE AT STALYBRIDGE.
An inquest was held at the house of Mr. Batchelor, Wellington Inn, on Tuesday afternoon, before Mr. Johnson, coroner, and respectable jury, of which Mr. Edwin Conway was foreman, touching the death of Hannah Wadsworth. The following evidence was taken:—
Andrew Wadsworth, power-loom weaver, of Brierley Street, Dukinfield, said: The deceased, Hannah Wadsworth, was my daughter. She was sixteen years of age on the 31st of March last. She resided with me, and worked with me at Messrs. Harrison’s mill, in Stalybridge. I last saw the deceased alive a little before six o'clock on the morning of Monday week. She left the house before me to go to her work, and when I got to the mill she was not there. I thought she would be locked out, but on inquiry I found that she had not been in the mill. I then went home, and found that the deceased had been home with the breakfast things, and left again, and the food in the pots had not been touched. I made all the inquiries I could, but I could hear no tidings of her until she was taken out of the canal yesterday about four o’clock. The dead body was brought home a little before five o’clock. We had had some angry words on the Sunday before she left home. I had that afternoon ascertained that she was in the family way, and so had my eldest daughter. I insisted on knowing who was the father, and she said Joseph Lunn. When I found who it was, I was nearly dumb. I have known him 14 or 15 years. He is a married man, and was an intimate friend of mine, coming to my house every day, and sometimes two or three times a day. She read until nine o’clock on Sunday night, and I then told her to get the breakfast ready for the morning. We were reconciled before we went to bed on Sunday night. Lunn was at my house a few days before she left. I had no suspicion what was going on between them. With that exception I have no fault to find with the girl. She was a good girl, one whom I could leave at any time.
George Bywaier, boatman, in the employ of Mr. Fawcett, corn miller, Wakefield, said: Yesterday afternoon I was passing through the sixth lock on the Huddersfield Canal, with a boat, when something prevented the lock gate closing. I got the boat hook and searched for the obstruction, and got hold of the deceased’s clothes, and pulled her out on to the lock side. She appeared as if she had been in the canal some time.
Joseph Lunn: I am a power-loom weaver, and I work at Cheetham’s new mill. I live in Newton’s Houses, Brierley Street. I knew the deceased, Hannah Wadsworth. I last saw her alive at home on last Friday morning but one. She was in the family way by me. She had told me so betwixt six and seven weeks since. I did not say anything to her. She was somewhere about sixteen years of age. I am turned 32; and have been married about twelve years. I have known her father a long time. He was a particular friend of mine. The deceased, when she told me, did not seem different to usual. Nothing was mentioned about keeping the child. She did not say anything to me about that.—This concluded the evidence.
The Coroner said there could be no moral doubt that deceased committed the rash act of destroying herself; but as there was no evidence, there must be an open verdict of "Found drowned.”
Mr. Smith, one of the jury, wished to know whether Lunn was at his work at the usual time on the morning in question.
Lunn was again called in, and said: I was at home on Monday morning until breakfast time; we lay in bed until daylight. I went out that morning about twenty minutes past eight o’clock. I live fifty or sixty yards from the deceased, and go in a different direction to my work.
Mr. Sadler intimated to the coroner that deceased’s sister believed that the statement of Lunn that he had not seen deceased that morning, was correct.
Lunn was then ordered to withdraw, and an open verdict of "Found drowned” was returned.
The jury then wished Lunn to be called in, and to be severely reprimanded by the coroner, he having, during the whole of the time he was giving his evidence, acted in a most unconcerned and dogged manner. Lunn entering the room, he was ordered to stand before the coroner and jury; and the Coroner, addressing him, said ; The jury has desired me to send for you, to express to you their indignation and disgust at your conduct. It appears that you have been acquainted with the father of this girl, and have known him for 12 or 13 years, and you have taken advantage of this to seduce this young child —only 16 years of age.—Lunn then replied in a dogged manner: I know that I have done wrong. The Coroner: Know that you have done wrong! Indeed, you have; and your conscience must ever accuse you of having done so. There can be no moral doubt that you have caused her death, which is clearly traceable to your conduct. Being a married man, too, makes the case still blacker against you. With other severe remarks on Lunn’s conduct, the coroner concluded and dismissed him.5

Hannah died on 4 January 1858 at Dukinfield, Cheshire, England, at the age of 16.4,5
