CRUEL ILL-TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AT BOGNOR.
William Woodruff and Elizabeth Woodruff his wife, were summoned for the alleged wilful ill-treatment of Arthur Godfrey Halsted, aged three years, and Bertie William Halsted, aged fifteen months.—Annie Herrington of Bridge Houses, Felpham-road. Bognor, stated that on the 27th June, whiist at defendants' house, she saw the female defendant kick the elder child, who was almost naked, and then knock its head against the wall with great cruelty. She also heard the male defendant, who was upstairs, smack the other child and tell it if it did not eat its food he would kill it. Later on she saw this child, and it had a black mark all down its face.—Eliza Halsted, mother of the children, said she paid 5s. a week for their maintenance. In consequence of hearing that they were illtreated she went to see Mrs. Woodruff. Upon remonstrating with her, Mrs. Woodruff replied that the younger child had fallen down ; it had got very dirty, and she had had occasion to beat it. Superintendent Robertson deposed that when he saw the children both were black and blue all over with bruises, and Dr. Cooke, a medical practitioner of Bognor, gave similar evidence adding that the marks appeared to be the result of cruelty and violence. Both pleaded guilty to the offence, the husband expressing regret for what had been done. The magistrates were of opinion that a case of very great cruelty had been proved, and sentenced each defendant to imprisonment for one calendar month with hard labour.6
