Appears in a newspaper article on on 3 August 1912 at at London, England, RIOTING IN LONDON DOCKS
THE EARLY DISTURBANCE FIERCE FIGHT.
The rioting which occurred shortly before seven o'clock on Wednesday, lasting for about an hour, was, it appears, the outcome of a preconceived plan by the strikers to rush to Victoria Dock from the entrance of Custom House Station. To obtain access to the dock at this point it is neceasary to mount a flight of steps at the station, cross a footbridge over the railway line and pass through a narrow gate. Between 2.000 and 3,000 strikers - another estimate puts the number at nearly 4,000 - packed the roadway outside the station and after the blacklegs had gone into work large numbers of trades unionists began to cross the bridge and enter the dock. Although the police, who numbered onlv seven at that spot, had their suspicions as to the strikers' intentions, they were unable to prevent them from going over the bridge, for it might have been the strikers desire to be taken on inside the dock. Therefore, the police had not sufficient justification for acting at that moment. Eventually 700 or 800 men managed to get inside Victoria Dock, and then the trouble began. As soon as the free labourers saw the hostile intention of their opponents they ceased work in order to defend themselves. Very quickly they were involved in a serious fight. Some of the blacklegs were armed with revolvers, and made use of these weapons, It is stated that three of the men who were shot were strikers, and that once striker who had a revolver woundud a blackleg. It was impossible for the police outside the Custom House to cross the bridge and go the assistance of the blacklegs, with a view to dispersing the combatants, for they had a huge mob to control. Consequently the fierce fight raged inside the dock for half an hour unchecked. Volleys of stones were slung, and missiles of every description were also used. Shots were fired, and belts, hooks, and even hammers were brought into play. Many of the combatants sustained injuries, and large numbers limped awav from the scene of the struggle bleeding from slight wounds about the head. Others were temporarily put out of action by kicks in various parts of the body. The twelve men who sought treatment at the Seamen's Hospital represented only a proportion of those who sustained injuries in one form or another. One of the men who were shot was removed in a cab, but all the others were able to walk. Halstead Elliott, who had a bullet the wall of the stomach, refused treatment and left. Another man was shot in the throat, and the bullet was not extracted. A third was hit with a bullet in the side, and in his case, also, the shot was allowed to remain. After the fight the dockk was over, the strikers, who had not been hurt, flocked back over the bridge and, it is stated incited their comrades outside the station, numbering about 2,000 or 3,000 to follow them and make short work of the blackleg's, who they said numbered onlv 50. Thus encouraged, many of the strikers moved forward, and in inspector and 6 constsbles suddenly found themselves wedged against the wall, and powerless to prevent the solid mass of humanity proceeding up the stairs across the bridge. The officers drew their truncheons and struck out, but their position was a serious one, the strike's retaliating hurling three or four of them into the roadway. Appeals for help brought 30 constables, who were not far away tothe scene, and with drawn baton they charged the mob.5

John BERRY had been a Blacksmith's Striker.

It appears the late floods had caused some of the props of the bridge to be loose, and when four of the men named Samuel Bently, James Halstead, John Dyson, and James Butterworth, were repairing or fastening the loose props, the bridge fell. The men were under the ruins for several hours ; Dryden and Butterworth were got out alive, but they are much bruised, and in a dangerous state; Bently and Halstead, who are both natives of Small Bridge, near Rochdale, were killed. They are from thirty to forty years age each, and have left families.4
