Appears in a newspaper article on on 20 April 1895 at at Burnley, Lancashire, THE SAD END OF BURNLEY DWARF.
DEATH FROM EXCESSIVE DRINKING.
WHO SUPPLIED HIM
On Thursday morning, in the Small Police Court, at the Burnley Town Hall, Mr. Coroner Robinson held an inquest on the body of Halstead Smith (30), a dwarf, and better known as "Little Halstead," who died on Monday evening whilst being conveyed to the police Btation on a charge of drunkenness.—Mr. Stuttard, of Colne, appeared lor Mr. Kirk, the landlord of the Dragoon Hotel.
The Coroner said if the jury, after hearing the evidence, were not satisfied as to the cause of death there could a post mortem examination.
Sarah, Smith, widow, of 1, Eastwood-street, stated that the deceased was her son and had lived with her. He had not been able to follow any regular employment and had had a " drop of drink " occasionally. He left his home sober and well at six o'clock on Monday evening, and she never saw him alive after. He had been locked up once or twice for being drunk.
Elizabeth Jackson, housekeeper at the Dragoon Hotel, said "Halatead" had been employed by her during Easter, the servant man being ill. He was not working thereon Monday, but he slipped into the house once or twice. He had very little to drink to her knowledge. She last saw him in the evening between 9-30 and 9-45, and be appeared to be perfectly sober. At 11-5 she noticed him helpless on the doorstep, a policeman having charge of him.
Richard Wilson, of 57, Ardwick-street, stated that on Monday evening 10-45 he went into the Dragoon Hotel. Ten minutes later his attention was attracted towards the door, and he saw "Halstead " lying on the floor. His legs were in the passage. He went to him, and assisted him outside, but "Halstead" never spoke. When witness left him he fell, striking his forehead. Wltness lifted him up again, put him on the step, and then left him. Witness thought he was drunk.
John William Boothman, of Rylands-st. said he saw the deceased on Monday night between 10-30 and 11 o'clock. He was coming down Hebrew road and fell besides Mr. Walker s, appearing to be drunk. He got up and went across into the Dragoon Hotel, and on his coming out witness saw that a man was holding him. When this man left him he again fell. The man afterwards put him on the doorstep and five minutes later the policeman came up and took charge of him.
By Mr. Stuttard : He did not see him fall against the vault door. "Halstead" was not in many minutes.
P.C.Brierley deposed of finding "Halstead" on the vault doorstep of the Dragoon Hotel at five minutes past eleven on Monday evening. He was very drank, and witness got assistance to bring him to Burnley. Sometimes deceased walked for about thirty yards, and he spoke to witness as a drunken person would do. Witness told him to try and walk a little himself, and "Halstead" replied "I am walking." On Bank Parade he began to breathe heavily and turned pale, so they put him on to a seat. He was helpless then and witness laid him on the seat and put a coat under him. Witness sent a man for a doctor and he refused to come. "Halstead" lived about ten minutes. Witness had not previously seen the deceased that evening. He had always taken a lot of drink ; people used to give it to him.
Mr. Eastwood (the foreman): Who was the doctor who refused to attend
Witness: Dr. Brown. He told the man to tell me to take him to the hospital.
A juryman : Were there any signs of him being drugged ?
Witness : He smelled very strong of beer and vomited once or twice.
The Coroner said it looked as if the man had died from apoplexy from drink. There was no where he got the drink, but there was no blame be attached to the people at the Dragoon Hotel because he did not obtain it there.
John Cawley, a waiter at the Alexandra Hotel, said he saw "Halstead" at that house at twenty minutes to ten on Monday evening. He had one pint of beer, paid for it himself, and went away alone in about twenty minutes.
P.C. Terry said he could not trace deceased anywhere else.
A Juryman : He must have had it at the Dragoon Hotel, then.
Mrs. Jackson, re-called at the request of the jury, said "Halstead" had only two of beer at the Dragoon Hotel just before ten o'clock. She did not serve him. He was then sober.
A Juryman (Mr. R. Smith) said that every time they attended inquests the deceased persons had had a "drop drink," and nobody had supplied it. That man had actually been killed by drink, and they could not get hold of the person who had supplied him. They ought get to the bottom of such cases.
The Coroner said the police made further investigations to see if they could get at the persons.
Mr. Smith said he had seen deceased drunk night after night.
After a consultation by the jury, the Foreman said their verdict was that he died from excessive drinking, accelerated by the fall. The jury felt certain that someone was to blame for supplying him with drink when he was in unfit state to receive it.4
