"A last lingering look of regret was bestowed on the once famous Abbey, and my steps retraced by the same path along the river bank in the direction Middleham, the towers of whose stately Castle stood out proudly against the evening sky, tinted by the setting sun; though no longer does St George*s banner, broad and gay. spread Its folds to lhe breeze on the Donjon Keep of Middleham, or the Bull, the ensign of the Nevilles, float on the wind. This was tbe abode of the Nevilles, one of the most ancient and powerful families in the North of England, and often the residence of the King-maker, the Earl of Warwick, the last of the barons. Of this Castle, one of our most distlnguished modern novelists has said—** the mightiest peers, the most renowned knights gathered to his hall. Middleham, not Windsor nor Shene, nor Westminster nor the Tower, seemed court England.* This Castle, too, was a favourite dwelling of the Duke of Gloucester (afterwards Richard III), and within its walls was born and also died his youthful heir. Edward Plantagenet. Prince of Wales. Much obscurity enshrouds this point of English history; and one chronieler, by mentioning his having “died an unhappy death,* would seem to indicate tt was caused either from an accident, or in some sudden or unexpected manner. This circumstance occurred In the month of April, 1454, whilst his royal parents were at Nottingham. The place of his burial is unknown up to the present time, though conjecture points strongly to Sheriff Hutton church as his sepulchre. On the north of Middleham stands the antique church, and within its altar rails is buried Carotins Amelia Halstead, authoress Rickard III. as Duke of Gloucester, and King of England, who became the wife of the Rev. William Atthill. a former sub dean of Middieham.4 "

The following notes wbich have reference to Warwick the King-maker, as well to the much-loved Charles Kingsley will have special interest not only for Warwickshire antiquarians but for the general reader. They are from the pen of the Rev. John Pickard, M.A., Rector of Newbourne, Suffolk. They "have oome to us through a friend of Mr. Pickard resident in Leamington. It is rather singular that comprehensive or special history of this place, once celebrated in Engilish history, and the abode the Kingmaker, the Earl of Warwick, and his son-in-law, Richard III., has been published in a separate form. There are many notices of Middleham in different works, and in the "Church of Middleham," published for the Camden Society in 1847. This work was compiled by the Rev. William Atthill, who was Canon Residentiary and Sub-Dean. His third wife was Caroline Amelia Halstead, the auther of " Richard III. Duke of Gloucester and King of England." She died in 1848, and is buried within the altar rails of Middleham Church. The church was made collegiate by Richard III., but fell at Bosworth Field before he could carry out his intention of endowment of the canonries. It is said that, on the suggestion of Mr. Atthill, Dr. Wood, the then Dean, and also the last who filled that office, the chapter of Middleham was revived, and stalls of a modern date erected in the choir of the collegiate church, and be it observed that not one shilling was annexed to the office. As nearly sixty years have elapsed since that time, the names of the chapter are worth preservation. With one of them I had an acquaintance, the celebrated Charles Kingsley, whose writings have won for him an honoured name where the English language is spoken.4
