Appears in a newspaper article on on 19 November 1842 at at Leeds, Yorkshire, DEATH FROM STARVATION, IN LEEDS.
On Saturday, an inquest was held at the Vagrant Office, before J. Blackburn, Esq., on view of the body of a man named Henry Halstead, 24 years of age, who had expired at that establishment the previous morning, having been there only a single night, under circumstances, as will be gathered from the following evidence. Indicating that he had died from starvation, and the want of the necesssaries of life
Henry Sinclair, ostler at the Harewood Anns. Ebenezer Street. I had known the deceased seven or eight months, He was a cloth dresser. I last saw him on Thursday night, when he was brought to the Vagrant Office. On Wednesday night week he got into the hay chamber of the Harewood Arms, and slept there unknown to me. On the following morning I found him there, and he said, he was very much pined and starved. I told him to go to the Workhouse, and he said. he had been there, and they had told him to go about his business ; they would have nothing to do with him. When I requested him to leave the place, he begged I would let him remain for the day. as he was so very lame. Notwithstanding his repeated promises to go away, he continued In the hay chamber eight days, up to Thursday night week. I used all ways I could to get him out. and even threatened to fetch a policeman, but without success. When I and another person said, we would take him to his wife, if he would not go out. he said. "Don't take me there." During that time I gave him a pint of milk every night and morning; and he had a pound of bread, part of which was still left when came to the Vagrant Office. I gave him a pint of ale just before he became to the Vagrant office, He never had his clothes off. He occasionally got up, and walked about the chamber, but was mostly laid down amongst the hay. He did not complain of any pain. When I asked him. if he never wanted to go out to the privy, he said, how could he? did not eat anything, and therefore he did not want. I did not acquaint my master that he was there; nobody but myself and companions knew it; as he kept saying he would go, I had not told any body else.
Mr. Wm. Sharp, landlord the Harewood Arms. I can offer no contradiction to the statements of the previous witness. I was first made acquainted with the circumstance about half-past nine on Thursday night. My mistress Informed me. that the neighbours said, that there was a man in the premises in a bad state. I sent for him into the house, and gave him some muffin and tea, but he only took tea, Word was sent to the Workhouse, and a gentleman came to examine him. and about eleven o’clock he was taken to the Vagrant Office.
Mr. Christopher Fountain Brown, one of the town's surgeons, stated, that a post mortem examination of the body had been made, and having described the general condition of the body, attributed the death of the deceased to exposure to cold, and the want of proper sustenance. He found no disease which would account for death. . .
Eliz. Halstead. wife of the deceased, said, she had not seen her husband during the last three weeks. They had been married two years and eight months, but had no family. She had been separated from him for some time, and was residing with her parents in St. John's Place, Holbeck, where she found employment in the capacity of a plain sewer. He was always negligent of his work, and spent his money away from home, having never since their marriage given her more than three months wages In the whole.
Miss Ann Hollins. of the Vagrant Office. When deceased was brought to the Vagrant Office on Thursday night last, he seemed to be very weak and poorly. We made him some tea. and he was washed all over with a warm bath. He was in a very destitute state, and all that he had on was so filthy that it was burnt as soon as taken off. When he got into bed he had poultices applied to his legs ; and he said he felt very comfortable after his wash. He did not complain of any particular pain. Yesterday morning, he had coffee to his breakfast. a little after eight, having had a little bread and milk shortly before. I conversed with hlm between nine and ten, and a little before his death, which took place about ten minutes before ten. I was not at all apprehensive he would die so soon, but perceiving the change, a surgeon was sent for. It was about twenty minutes before he died. The surgeon did not arrive until after his death. I gave him nothing to rouse or stimulate him. He died very quickly.
The Coroner said, it was very much to be lamented, that in a town like this, where there were so many charitable institutions. that some one or other acquainted with the parish authorities, had not been informed of this man's state, there was no doubt whatever, although he might not belong to Leeds, that the Overseers and other parties who had an opportunity ot recommending patients to different. institutions, if they had known the state in which this man was. would have recommended him there or taken care of him. The ostler appeared to be the only person who knew any thing about it. and appears to have done all he could, and had perhaps only been guilty of a little indiscretion in not making the case known to his master. After his situation was known, he was brought to the Vagrant office, and all the aid was rendered him which his circumstances seemed to need, and it appears quite clear from the evidence that the man had died from actual want and starvation. Now that such a thing as this should have occurred in a place like Leeds was very much to be lamented, yet at the same time even this case had occurred as it were in secresy, and it therefore became a circumstance the more to be regretted. Hr believed he had now been coroner for six years, and this was the first instance of the kind which had come before him. He had had cases in which privation had laid the foundation of disease which had ultlmately issued In death ; but such a verdict as the Jury would be bound to give in this ease had never yet been given in this district since he had been coroner, He thought the only verdict they could give would that the deceased had died from want and starvation ; both these circumstances had contributed to the man’s death. In the first Instance he had not sufficient food ; in the next, he had not a proper place to live in ; and had sunk under debility induced thereby. It seems that he had been an extravagant and thoughtless young man. not particularly given to intemperance, but had been in the habit of lavishly spending his money from home, instead of giving to his wife.
The Jury then returned a verdict that the deceased had "Died from starvation and the want the necessaries of life."5

Each year with the fall of the leaf the list of the pioneers of the colony gradually dwindles, and on Monday last another of those who have borne the heat and burden of the day passed away, when Mr. John Halstead, of Woodside, died at the age of 73. A little over a month ago Mr. Halstead complained of being unwell, but he was always able to get about, and even as late as Saturday morning last he walked up and down the main street.

Mr. and Mrs. Halstead were married at Elland Old Church in Halifax, Yorkshire, on February 1, 1848 and : at the time of the death were thus within ten months of being in a position to celebrate their golden wedding. Shortly after the marriage a passage was taken in the ship Farieigh for Sydney, the destination being reached in the same year, and after a few months a migration was made to South Australia, where a preliminary stay in Adelaide preceded a removal to Inverbrackie.

Here Mr. Halstead carried on the business of butcher and farmer in conjunction with his brother, Mr. Thomas Halstead, for about 20 years, when the partnership was dissolved, and the deceased gentleman moved into the township of Woodside, where he carried on the butchering business until, his retirement. Mr. Halstead always evinced a strong interest in all matters relating to the welfare of the district. Besides the widow, Mr. Halstead leaves the following children:—Mr. T. H. Halstead, of Sydney ; Mrs. H. Hutchings, of Lobethal; Mrs. T. Pugh, jun., of Balhannah ; Miss Halstead and Miss Eliza Halstead ; and a number of grandchildren. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon at St. Mark's Cemetery, Woodside, was largely attended, and the Rev. J. S. Wayland officiated.5
