Death of a Norland Man in Australia.— From “The Advertiser,” Adelaide, published on January 4th, we take the following :—“The death is announced of Mr. Thomas Halstead, of Dawson Street, Fullerton Estate, in his 77th year. Mr. Halstead, whose wife predeceased him about 15 months, came to South Australia with his family from Halifax, Yorkshire, England, arriving at Port Adelaide on June 15th, 1848. The deceased left Adelaide for Melbourne diggings in 1852, and being unsuccessful returned to this colony. In 1854 he was appointed poundkeeper at Inverbrackie, and a year later, along with his brother John, also commenced butchering, which business they carried on successfully until 1879, when deceased gave up. In 1884 be started sheep and cattle farming, and in 1888 he sold the interest in his land, living retirement first at Woodside, then at Parkside.’ Mr. Thomas Halstead is still remembered by many inhabitants of Norland and district. He was the second son of the late John Halstead, of Follingworth Hall. Farm, Norland, and was farmer. He married Nancy Holroyd, of Barkisiand, in 1843, the ceremony being performed at the Halifax Parish Church. Mr. Agur Halstead, of Marshall Hall Mills, Elland, and Mrs. James Priestley, Plum-street, Halifax, are the only brother and sister now left, out of a family of 9, four of whom, at remarkably long ages, have died within the past two years, namely : John, aged 74 ; Samuel, aged 80 ; Elizabeth, aged 78 ; and Thomas, aged 77.7

Mr. Halstead was a colonist of 49 years' standing, having arrived with Mrs. Halstead in Sydney in 1848 by the ship Farleigh. After staying seven momths in New South Wales it was decided to come to South Australia. After a short stay in Adelaide they removed to Inverbrackie, near Woodside. There, in conjunction with his brother. Mr. Thomas Halstead, the business of butchering and farming was carried on for 20 years, and on the dissolution of the partnership the deceased settled in Woodwide, where until 12 years ago he conducted the butcher's business. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead were married in Halifax, Yorkshire, at Elland Old Church, on February 1, 1848, and were thus at the time of the death within some months of being able to celebrate the jubilee of their marriage. Mr Halstead, who was 73, died on Monday last, and within a couple of days of his decease was able to take his usual walks. He leaves besides the widow the following children - Mr T H Halstead, of Sydney, Mrs H Hutchings, of Lobethal, Mrs T Pugh, jun., of Balhannah, Miss Halstead and Miss Eliza Halstead, and a number of grandshildren. The deceased gentleman while not holding public office always took a strong interest in any matters relating to the district. The interment was conducted by Rev. J. S. Wayland.4
