Lorry Drivers' Evidence at Inquest
JURY'S RIDER
The Bristol inquest on Charles Dixon (78), of Coaley Road, Shirehampton, who was involved in an accident with a motor-lorry, at the junction of Station Road and Portway, Shirehampton, on January 12, and who died a few minutes after the accident, was held yesterday.
Police Constable Tall said that when he arrived at the scene of the accident he found Dixon lying on the footpath, having apparently been moved. A doctor certified him to be dead.
"The lorry involved was standing on the river side the road, about three feet from the kerb. Its weight unladen was three tons nine hundredweight,
In a statement to the police the driver of the lorry said: —"I was driving my lorry along Portway towards Avonmouth about 15 feet from the kerb and gradually closing in. I was travelling about 23 miles an hour, and had all my lights on. with my headlamps dipped. The windscreen wiper was still working.
"FELT SLIGHT BUMP"
"I saw no one in the road, but felt a slight bump on the offside. It was so slight that it was hardly enough to cause me to pull up. I did pull up, however, and got out, went back, and saw a man lying in the road."
Stanley Jenkins, of St. George, said that driving from Bristol to Avonmouth the lighting effect was terrible. He said the lights dazzled and glared—it was blinding in patches, but dark in others.
George Martin, of Weston, Bath, a lorry driver, said that he was going along Portway when another lorry passed him.
"We got to Station Road, when I saw something fall from the lorry in front, which I took to be a tarpaulin.
"My headlights then picked up the object in the road, and I saw it was a human form. The other lorry then pulled up."
The coroner: Before you saw the object falling had you seen anyone in the road at all? —No, sir, and I was only about 10 to 15 feet away before I realised what it really was.
A verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. The jury added that in their opinion the driver was not keeping a proper look-out.8
