THIS is another of those "local boy makes good" stories.
When Harry Halstead was a kid of 12 he attended Bradshaw Street Council School and Regent Street Methodist Sunday School. Then, 24 years ago, with his parents and sister Joan, he emigrated to New Zealand, continued his education and finally made the grade at Wellington University. Graduating, he joined the Civil Service, but later transferred to the New Zealand Police Force—and by the time he. was 26 years of age he was Superintendent in charge of the Fiji Islands.
Supt. Halstead, now in his 37th year, is at present re-visiting England for the first time. He came over on the " Dominion Monarch" and disembarked at Southampton on August 12th. Purpose of his visit is to take a refresher course at Scotland Yard, and he expects to be in England a few months. He will, of course, take the first opportunity to visit friends and relations in his home town, and whilst in Nelson will be staying with Mr. E. Lonsdale, Oak Villa, Carr Hall.
Fiji is a British colony consisting of an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean; the islands number about 250 of which some 80 are inhabited. The formation of the larger islands is volcanic, their surface rugged, their vegetation luxuriant, and their appearance very beautiful.

In the census of 7 April 1861 at 5 Rose Hill East, Brighton, Sussex, England, Edward was listed as aged 36 born Brighton, the Head of Household; a Painter, living with his wife Sarah, visitor Sarah CHATFIELD, aunt Harriett HUNTER.⁴

Appears in a newspaper article on at it is unclear as to why Edward and Sarah appear on the census returns for 1851 and 1861 as HUNTER and not HALSTED. His death in 1866 is from the same address as the 1861 census and is registered by Harriet HUNTER the aunt fom the 1861 census.

Edward and Sarah's marriage clearly has his name as HALSTED and the marriage of Sarah in 1876 is again clearly in the name. The term Painter in the census returns could be misleading and I did wonder if he was a portrait painter using an assumed name but his death certificate shows him as a House Painter.

Ada ATKINSON was born on 10 March 1889.

     George Percy BAXTER was born in 1886.

His father was listed as George BAXTER, an Advertising Agent. Married in the Register Office by Licence. The marriage was witnessed by William E BAXTER and Helena BENNETT.^1,2 George Percy BAXTER and Ada BAXTER were divorced on 21 October 1921.

     Ethel HALSTEAD was born on 5 February 1884 at Barnsley, Yorkshire, England.¹ She was the daughter of John HALSTEAD and Sarah GOODALL. In the census of 1 June 1900 at Mineral, Cherokee, Kansas, United States of America, she was listed as single, aged 16 born England, the daughter of John HALSTEAD.²
Ethel died on 30 October 1928 at the age of 44.

     George HALSTED witnessed There is no mention of George in his fathers will nor can I find any trace elsewhere.
