THE RESULT OF GETTING INTO A BAD CLIQUE.
At the Dover Police Court on Monday, before Mr. W. Bradley and Alderman Sellens,
Samuel Thomas Halstead (20), of 24, Winchelsea St., was charged with stealing from a barrack room at Archcliffe Fort, a nickel wrist watch, valued at £1 Is., the property of Frank Buckwell.
Frank Harold Buckwell, a signalman in the Royal Corps of Signals, Archcliffe Fort, identified the watch as his property. He knew the defendant by sight, as he had seen him in the barrack room.He was there on Friday about 9.15 a.m.Witness missed his watch about 10 a.m. It hung on a hook over the bed. He telephoned to Langdon Battery, where the only other two men in the barrack room were. Information was given to the police.
Frederick Austen, of 12, Russell Place, isaid he had known the defendant since 1922. On Friday, the defendant came to his house and showed him the watch He said that he got it from a friend in exchange for his own and 2s. Jokingly he (witness) said he would give him 2s. 6d. for.it, and defendant said "3s." Witness gave him 3s. for it. On Sunday witness handed the watch over to Detective Constable Pay.
Detective Constable Pay said that, in consequence of information received on Saturday, he made enquiries, with the result that at 11.45 on Sunday morning he went to the Admiralty Pier, where he saw the defendant. He questioned him about the watch. Defendant admitted that he was in the barrack room on Friday, and that he took the watch.He said he had sold it to Austen for 3s. Witness went to 12, Russell Place with the defendant, and recovered the watch. When charged at the Police Station; the defendant made no reply. He was admitted to bail.
Defendant pleaded guilty. He said he was suffering from hemorrhage at the time, and it was worrying him. He took it unintentionally, and wanted to take it back as soon as he got it.
The Chairman: What were you doing there? —I have to go every Monday and Friday for washing for Mr. Brown, of Clarendon Place.
Mrs. Halstead, defendant's mother said that a clique he had got into was gradually drawing him away from home. She hoped this would be a lesson to him.
Defendant was bound over for six months, and put on probation.3

THE RESULT OF GETTING INTO A BAD CLIQUE.
At the Dover Police Court on Monday, before Mr. W. Bradley and Alderman Sellens,
Samuel Thomas Halstead (20), of 24, Winchelsea St., was charged with stealing from a barrack room at Archcliffe Fort, a nickel wrist watch, valued at £1 Is., the property of Frank Buckwell.
Frank Harold Buckwell, a signalman in the Royal Corps of Signals, Archcliffe Fort, identified the watch as his property. He knew the defendant by sight, as he had seen him in the barrack room.He was there on Friday about 9.15 a.m.Witness missed his watch about 10 a.m. It hung on a hook over the bed. He telephoned to Langdon Battery, where the only other two men in the barrack room were. Information was given to the police.
Frederick Austen, of 12, Russell Place, isaid he had known the defendant since 1922. On Friday, the defendant came to his house and showed him the watch He said that he got it from a friend in exchange for his own and 2s. Jokingly he (witness) said he would give him 2s. 6d. for.it, and defendant said "3s." Witness gave him 3s. for it. On Sunday witness handed the watch over to Detective Constable Pay.
Detective Constable Pay said that, in consequence of information received on Saturday, he made enquiries, with the result that at 11.45 on Sunday morning he went to the Admiralty Pier, where he saw the defendant. He questioned him about the watch. Defendant admitted that he was in the barrack room on Friday, and that he took the watch.He said he had sold it to Austen for 3s. Witness went to 12, Russell Place with the defendant, and recovered the watch. When charged at the Police Station; the defendant made no reply. He was admitted to bail.
Defendant pleaded guilty. He said he was suffering from hemorrhage at the time, and it was worrying him. He took it unintentionally, and wanted to take it back as soon as he got it.
The Chairman: What were you doing there? —I have to go every Monday and Friday for washing for Mr. Brown, of Clarendon Place.
Mrs. Halstead, defendant's mother said that a clique he had got into was gradually drawing him away from home. She hoped this would be a lesson to him.
Defendant was bound over for six months, and put on probation.3
