Mr. Halstead, whose wife predeceased him about 15 months, came to South Australia with his family from Halifax, Yorkshire, England, arriving at Port Adelaide on June 15th, 1848. The deceased left Adelaide for Melbourne diggings in 1852, and being unsuccessful returned to this colony. In 1854 he was appointed poundkeeper at Inverbrackie, and a year later, along with his brother John, also commenced butchering, which business they carried on successfully until 1879, when deceased gave up. In 1884 be started sheep and cattle farming, and in 1888 he sold the interest in his land, living retirement first at Woodside, then at Parkside.’ Mr. Thomas Halstead is still remembered by many inhabitants of Norland and district. He was the second son of the late John Halstead, of Follingworth Hall. Farm, Norland, and was farmer. He married Nancy Holroyd, of Barkisiand, in 1843, the ceremony being performed at the Halifax Parish Church. Mr. Agur Halstead, of Marshall Hall Mills, Elland, and Mrs. James Priestley, Plum-street, Halifax, are the only brother and sister now left, out of a family of 9, four of whom, at remarkably long ages, have died within the past two years, namely : John, aged 74 ; Samuel, aged 80 ; Elizabeth, aged 78 ; and Thomas, aged 77.3
