Appears in a newspaper article on on 9 August 1930 at at Burnley, Lancashire, BURNLEY WOMAN'S SUICIDE.
Inquest Story of Depression After Husband's Death.
Depressed through the sudden death of her husband about three months ago, Mrs. Ethel Jane Cronshaw, 23, Altham street, Burnley, became mentally unbalanced and ended her life on Wednesday morning by inhaling coal gas. The inquiry into the circumstances of her death was conducted by Mr. W. F. Sutcliffe, Deputy Coroner, at the Town Hall, on Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. Hilda Halstead, 5, Margaret street, sister of Mrs. Cronshaw, stated that the latter, who was 53 years of age. had lived alone since the death of her husband. She had been in indifferent health for the last twelve months, suffering from stomach trouble for which complaint she had been medically attended. She had followed her occupation as a weaver during the whole of the time. In May last Mr. Cronshaw died very suddenly and since then her sister had been very depressed. She had seen a doctor on two occasions recently to see if he could give her something to tone her up. Mrs. Cronshaw had often remarked to witness that she felt very lonely and wished she was dead. It had been her practice to go to witness's house each night to have her supper, and she used to stay with her at the week end. On Tuesday last Mrs. Cronshaw attended to her work as usual and came to witness's house about 9-30 in the evening and had her supper. She left about an hour later to return home. Witness made an arrangement to go out with her the following night.
On Wednesday morning about quarter to ten witness was notified at her work, by Mrs. Jones, a neighbour, that Mrs. Cronshaw had not got up and that no answer could be got by knocking at tho door. Witness went to the house and failing to get a reply went for Mr. Horn, the caretaker at Angle-street Chapel, who got a ladder and entered the house through the bedroom window. He afterwards came downstairs, unlocked the door and witness entered the house. On getting inside she saw her sister lying fully dressed near the gas oven on the far side of the house. There was a strong smell of gas and witness immediately left the house, being informed later that her sister was dead.
Mr. Albert Horn, 53, Hurtley street, caretaker at Angle street Chapel. said he had known Mrs Cronshaw for the last thirteen years. He knew that she was troubled and depressed over the death of her husband in May last. Witness had often seen her crying and had tried to cheer her up. On Wednesday morning about 10 o'clock he was following his work at the chapel when Mrs. Halstead came for him, and consequent on the information she gave him he obtained a ladder and entered Mrs. Cronshaw's home by the upstairs window. When he got into the bedroom he could smell gas. There was no one in that room, but the bed looked as if it had been slept in. He went downstairs, and after letting Mrs. Halstead in the house, he looked round and saw Mrs. Cronshaw lying on her right side in the far corner of the room and facing the gas oven Her head was on a pillow and there was a flexible pipe fixed on a gas bracket, the other end of the pipe being in Mrs. Cronshaw's mouth. She was fully dressed. He pulled the tube out of her mouth and afterwards carried her to the door and tried to revive her. but her arms were stiff and she appeared to be dead.
P.C. Jas. Bridge said that about eleven o clock on Wednesday morning he was on duty at Duke Bar when he was informed of the occurrence. He immediately went to the house and on entering noticed a strong smell of gas. He found deceased lying on her right side fully dressed, and with her head on a cushion. A tube was fastened to a gas pipe on the wall about six feet from the floor, and the other end was in the woman's mouth. The gas was still on and coming through the tube and also from a bracket hanging from the centre of the ceiling. He turned off the gas and with the assistance of witness Horn, carried her to the door. He tried to revive her for about, seven minutes, but. there was no sign of life and a doctor arriving pronounced life extinct.
The Deputy Coroner returned a verdict of "Suicide by inhaling coal gas while of unsound mind.13

Appears in a newspaper article on on 4 May 1940 at at Burnley, Lancashire, England, CYCLISTS SHOULD BE INSURED EAST LANCS.
CORONER'S INQUEST COMMENTS
"This is an unfortunate case, and it really ought to bring the days of compulsory insurance for cyclists much nearer," said the East Lancashire Coroner (Mr. F. Rowland) at an inquest at Nelson yesterday on William Anderton Brunton (50), weaver, 18, May Street, Barrowford who died last Wednesday after he had been knocked down by a cyclist.
Elizabeth Hannah Brunton, widow, said that in 1914 her husband joined the Army, serving in France and Germany. He was gassed while in France, but he recovered. Last Monday at 6-30 he went the pictures. She did not see him again until 10-40 p.m., when he was brought home injured. She bathed a wound at the back of his head, and they went to bed at 12 o'clock, but deceased could not sleep owing to pain. She went downstairs and made the fire, and he went downstairs for half an hour. He slept for a while and then returned to bed, but woke up with pains in his head. She called in a doctor. During the day her husband could not speak properly, and he said he had pain in the right side of the neck, which she rubbed with vaseline. He later went to sleep, and she watched him all night. He became unconscious and died at 5-40 on Wednesday morning.
Dr. Chevassut said deceased was suffering from concussion. Death was due to the injuries he had sustained. Deceased had only a very small wound on the back of the head, this being more an abrasion of a superficial character.
The Coroner: I suppose the shock caused a great part ?
Dr. Chevassut There must have been a fracture of the base of the skull, although there was no external evidence of it.
VISIBILITY "NIL"
Seth Wilson, cotton weaver, 8, Wilton-st., Barrowford, said at 10 o'clock last Monday night he was walking along Reedyford-road, Nelson, towards Barrowford, along with Brunton. They started to cross the road. When they had got about the centre of the road he looked to the left, and then observed a light coming straight at them. He tried to pull Brunton away, but could not do so. The cycle collided with him, and he was knocked to the ground. Visibility that night was nil.
Ronald Greenwood, cashier, 19, Nora-street, Barrowford, said he was walking along the road with a man named Halstead, and they saw a cyclist pass from behind them.
The Coroner: How was the cyclist going slow, moderate or fast? —He was going at a very fast speed in the middle of the road.
I think that you commented to Mr Halstead about the speed?— Yes, I did, I said he was going too fast.
After he had gone about 12 yards past you did you hear a crash?—Yes, I went to the scene and saw Mr. Brunton being lifted up by his friend. He was very dazed, but after having a drink of tea in a neighbouring house he recovered slightly. On the way home Brunton kept repeating the question "Who knocked me down?"
Holgate Halstead, taper's labourer, 18, May-street, who was with the last witness, also stated that the cyclist was going too fast. Raymond Ashworth, fire-range slabber, 161, Gisburn-road, Barrowford, said that he was riding his pedal cycle along Reedyford-road in The Coroner You hayb heard the other two
The Coroner: You have heard the other two witnesses say that you were riding at a very fast speed, what do you say?-—lt was a moderate speed day, but a fast speed
WAS NOT FEELING WELL
Do I understand that you say that it was a moderate speed by day and a fast speed under these conditions?—That is correct.
I think you wanted to get home as you had not been feeling well?—Yes, that's right.
This is a racing cycle?-—Yes, but that does not mean that I cannot go slowly.
Witness added that he bumped into something. He spun round and was able to keep on his machine by throwing his leg out.
The Coroner: You saw nothing until you felt the bump?—No, I never saw anything
You had an electric lamp in front which was covered with brown paper? —Yes.
That would leave you without means of seeing where you were going? —Yes, the paper cut part of the light out, and I could see only right under the wheel.
I think that cyclists can be insured against any claims for about a shilling year?—l could not say. I am not insured.
You have been going about on a cycle which under these circumstances has been nothing more than a lethal weapon. If you had been insured and had killed anybody you could at any rate have provided means for recompense?—l am not insured.
The Coroner, in returning a verdict of "Death by misadventure," said that unfortunately the cyclist was under age, and was not a position to make recompense to the relatives if any were found to be due. He thought that the accident could have been avoided by reasonable care and caution on the part of the pedal cyclist. Though pedestrians had their own duty to perform, he was taking into consideration the evidence of the witnesses, Greenwood and Halstead, that the cyclist was going too fast, consequently people crossing the road in the black-out conditions would have very little opportunity of getting away from a silent machine, going at a speed of about 20 miles an hour.3
