An inquest was held at Chesterle-Street on Saturday, on Harry Halstead, aged 41, a driver in the R.A.S.C., of 36, Elm Avenue, Nottingham, who was fatally injured on December 21st by a bullet which penetrated a wooden hut which he was working.
The coroner said the huts were within 1,400 yards of a firing range, he hoped the military authorities would take precautions to see that such a thing did not recur.
Lieut. Joseph L. Reeves said that he was instructed to carry out firing exercises on a certain range. The positions of an imaginary enemy force were at some old butts. Live ammunition was being tised.
Various flanking operations were carried out, and the usual safety precautions taken. The hut in which Halstead was injured was in totally different direction from the butts. It was possible for a bullet to ricochet.
