RYHILL MEN EXONERATED AT INQUEST
We have made extensive inquiries and we are entirely satisfied. There have been all sorts rumours current, but there nothing in them.” So said Superintendent H. P. Valley at the inquest at Rylrill yesterday Albert Halstead (28) miner, of 27, New Brunswick, Ryhill, who was dying on the Nosteil-Ryhill road at midnight Saturday, 17 June. Richard Merrington, miner, 32, Long Row, Nostell, said that, Halstead had been playing cricket with Nostell and left witness at his home about midnight. Kenneth Hill, haulage hand, of 1, Garden terrace, Cemetery road, Ryhill, said that he and a man named Pearce were cycling from Pontefract after a dance when he saw Pearce swerve, crash into the curb and fall off his machine. He said he had just missed a man in the road. Witness then saw a man lying in the road, unconscious and bleeding from the head. "I do not think Pearce hit him." added witness. Horace Pearce, haulage hand, 5, Garden terrace, Ryhill, gave similar evidence. Dr. H. Pare, who said death was due to a fracture of the skull and a bruise at Hie back of the head, suggested that it was caused by a fall rather than by a blow. Returning verdict that there was not sufficient evidence to show how the fracture was caused the jury exonerated the cyclists from blame.4
