SAD STORY AT AN INQUEST ON A BURNLEY GIRL.
CORONER'S STRONG COMMENT.
"SOMEONE HAS ACTED A VERY CADDISH PART."

At an inquest at Burnley, to-day, Annie Halstead (21), reacher-in at a mill, who was found gassed at her home, 42 May-street, Burnley. yesterday, the Coroner returned a verdict of "Suicide." finding there was not sufficient evidence to indicate the state of her mind the time.
Ann Ellen Halstead said her daughter, a cripple, got some medicine a few days ago. She told witness not to worry. Yesterday she stayed in bed, stating she did not feel fit to walk to the mill. On the afternoon after witness had returned from the Employment Exchange a man who had been cleaning the bedroom window at the house raised an alarm.
On going upstairs witness and her father found a tube attached to a gas bracket and the other end near deceased on the bed.
FED UP OF BEING IN PAIN.”
A letter in Miss Halstead’s handwriting was found, and the Coroner (Mr. H. Proctor) intimated that in this mention was made of the girl being fed up of being in pain, and added, "If you want to know the truth our Sarah or Harry will tell you who the man is that has made me do this. My only wish is he will be made to suffer for the way he has lied to me and made my life a misery.”
Mr. Procter said a name and address was given in the letter, and a man who said he was prepared to give evidence was called. He said he had known Miss Halstead as an attender at the same church he visited. He had never met her by appointment. He first got to know her about two years ago, when she questioned him about Holywell, North Wales, and he advised her to pay a visit there. He had not seen her during the last 12 months.
Witness added that he had never suggested a wrong thing to the girl.
CORONER’S QUESTIONS.
The Coroner: You never promised to marry her or take her away?—No.
Your only acquaintance with her was derived from seeing her at the church, or at the gate of the churchyard?— That is all.
The Coroner pointed out that he had considered it was in the man’s interest to call him to give evidence, and witness replied, You have done right, sir.”
Commenting on the letter, the Coroner described it as an intelligent one, and added, Somenone has acted a caddish part.”
It was mentioned in the letter that Miss Halstead was fed up,” and the Coroner said it was clear she had suffered from a recurrence of an ailment.4 Annie was buried on 26 August 1931 at the Cemetery, Burnley, Lancashire, England.5
