We came out and had our drinkings about 1 o'clock and de'd and I afterwards went down in the skep which is worked by a steam engine. Dec'd got out in a chamber about 20 yards for the bottom where some air pipes were to be fixed. Geo Thompson then came down and staid at the chamber wch is wooden scaffold hanging on a rope in the shaft. The shaft was walled to within 3 or 4 yards of the bottom. About 3 o'clock in the afternoon I heard something fall or scatter on the bottom. Chas Senior who was with me called to dec'd saying "Joe come down there's something scattering" Dec'd asked what is there?" I replied "There's no danger". A little clay afterwards fell off the crib and Senior called to dec'd to come down. Dec'd then got into the skep and came down to within 2 yards of the bottom and then stopt. He took fold of the flange of the crib and went partly round it when it broke and let down at 15 or 16 yards of the wall all round. The bricks fell into the skep and to the bottom. The skep was drawn up immediately as just as the wall was giving way dec'd called out "go on" I have seen him frequently examine the sides. Henry Sharp is the underground viewer and gave orders to the chargeman. There are 7 or 8 cribs in the shaft and devious lengths of walling. The drift is about 6 feet high and the thickness between the crown of the arch and the crib was about a foot. We were preparing to arch the drift. The roof of the arch was hand build. The drift is about 6 feet wide. Dec'd told me to go into the drift. We had not had a shot that day. Dec'd did not come down for nearly 20 minutes after Senior first called to him.
Verdict. Accidentally injured.
