We all loved you well, but God loved you best.
So took you home to Eternal Rest.

Obituary of William Halstead BROOKS: on 19 October 1917 at Clitheroe, Lancashire, England, PRIVATE WM. H. BROOKS.
The war continues to take a terrible toll of Billington soldiers, and we doubt whether there is any community of similar size in the country which has suffered to such an extent. Almost every battle has brought its burden of grief. The latest fighting on the Western front has further thinned the ranks of the gallant village boys. One of those who has fallen is Private William Halstead Brooks, 2/4 East Lancashire Regiment, who carried on the business of a newsagent, and was a familiar figure not only in Billington, but also at Barrow and Wisweil. The news of his death was communicated by another local soldier. Private Francis Haworth, whose home is at Bridge End. His letter was written on the 10th inst. and stated that Private Brooks was killed by a shell. but he does not give the date. He mentions, however, that the body was laid to rest beside that of Jack Riley, another Billington soldier who made the supreme sacrifice some months ago. Private Haworth himself is in hospital, suffering from injuries to the head which, however, are not serious.
Private Brooks was very widely known, and it is doubtful whether he had a single enemy. Enlisting on the 31st July, 1916. he went to Prance on March 1st last. and acted as company runner. His death will severely felt at the Baptist Church, of which he had acted as secretary and treasurer for several years. For some time he also acted superintendent of the Sunday school. He leaves a widow and one child, with whom we deeply sympathise.
