Appears in a newspaper article on on 17 March 1907 at at Colne, Lancashire, COLNE BOYS' DANGEROUS PASTIME
A sequel to lads' tricks was the appearance the Colne Police Court, on Monday, of five boys who answered summonses taken out for doing wilful damage to trucks. Their names were Miles Higgins, George Poole, Harry Wilson, Halstead Nutter, and Thomas Clegg.
Mr. D. Smith (of Mr. Bracewell's office) stated that on the 17th inst., in consequence of what Mr. James Cox heard he went to the mill premises and quarry belonging to Messrs. Cox and Sons. On arrival he saw defendants, along with a number other youths, running the trucks, which were used for conveying material. The bodies of the trucks had been taken off, and the wheels and the framework wore being run about, some being sent to the bottom of the quarry. The trucks were damaged and twisted. In addition the lads took stones from off the retaining wall and were throwing them into the bottom of the quarry. The boys were not only running in danger of injuring themselves by the waggons, but had they got into the quarry they would never have got out alive, because there was nineteen feet depth of water at the bottom. The damage done amounted to about £l.
James Cox gave evidence, and said that when arrived on the scene there were trucks in all directions. They had been thrown off the line repeatedly. He did not wish press the case, but hoped the Bench would assist the firm in trying to stop that conduct. They had had a watchman on the premises, yet they found the greatest difficulty in stopping lads from going there. Some of the trucks had run into the mill wall, and had it been frosty they would have probably brought the wall down, as there was a steep decline.
The Mayor (Alderman E. Carr, J.P.), stated that the Bench could not take a lenient view of the case. They had so many complaints about the damage done to property by youths that the Bench, were bound to take notice it. Higgins, Poole, and Cligg - who had been before the Court previously were fined 5s. and costs; and Wilson and Nutter 2s 6d. and costs, the five defendants also having to share the damage.3 In the census of 2 April 1911 at 27 Boundry Street, Colne, Lancashire, he was listed as single, a Cotton Weaver, aged 18 born COlne, the son of Turner NUTTER.4
Halstead married Eva RIDEHALGH on 22 May 1915 at the Register Office, Burnley, Lancashire, England.5
Halstead died on 28 April 1918 at Belgium. He was a private in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He was awarded the Bristish War Medal and the Victory Medal.6
