Appears in a newspaper article on on 18 January 1928 at at Worthing, Sussex, England, Death of Mr. W. Gerard Smith.
HIS CONNECTION WITH STORRINGTON COLLEGE,
A NOTABLE PROFESSIONAL CAREER.
Mr. William Gerard Smith, whose sudden death on Saturday morning, at Storrington College, came as such a shock to the whole neighbourhood, was born on May 29th, 1857, being the youngest son of Mr. Henry Smith, Accountant General at the War Office.
He was educated at Christ's Hospital, London, and became Head Grecian before gaining an Open Scholarship at Worcester College, Oxford. Here he read Classics and took an Honours Degree in Classics. He rowed in his College boat for two years and assisted it in gaining the Headship of the river and in making seven bumps in six nights.
He was also a fine tennis player, and obtained his half-blue for the 'Varsity, and he won the Challenge Cup for Fives at Worcester College.
A WONDERFUL TEACHER.
On leaving Oxford he started on his long and eminently successful career as a Schoolmaster.
For some time he was with Major Lendy, the great Army coach, at Sunbury-on-Thames; he then became Second Master at the Isle of Wight College, and joined Mr. W. A. Fuller at Btarriaigton in 1911. On the latter's death in 1917 he became Principal of the College.
Innumerable soldiers and men of other professions all over the world owe much to Mr. Smith's wonderful teaching, wide reading, and broad outlook, and his delightful sense of humour and tact often helped both master and pupil through the most difficult moments. But above all Mr. Smith will be remembered for his optimism, his absolute unselfishness, and his genius for friendship. To know him was to love him.
He took an active interest in the life of the village, and in his later years was a familiar figure on bowling greens, being a member the Committee of the Comrades Bowling Club.
One who knew him well writes : "Storrington is the poorer by the loss of a very fine gentleman."
A FORMAL INQUIRY
Owing to the unexpectedness of the death it was found necessary to told a formal inquiry, and this was accordingly carried out at the College on Monday afternoon by the Coroner for West Sussex (Mr. F. W. Butler).
The first witness was the widow, Mrs. JAQUETTA BEATRICE SMITH, of Burnside, who stated that her husband was Principal at the College. and was aged 70 last birthday. He was in the habit of visiting her every evening, and on Friday he called about 9.15 and left at about twenty .minutes to eleven. He was in his usual health; in fact, he was feeling slightly better after a cold. He had last been attended in the spring. There had been nothing to upset or excite him, and nothing to account for the death.
Mr. JOHN SHEPHERD, waiter at the College, said that he saw Mr. Smith between 9.15 and 9.30 on Friday evening, and spoke to him and noticed nothing unusual. He went up to his bedroom at 7.15 on Saturday morning. and found him lying on the floor with his head at the foot of the bed. He was in his nightclothes. The bed had evidently been slept in. The candle on the table was flickering. Witness lit the lamp and endeavoured to rouse him. and as there was no response he got the impression that Mr. Smith was dead. He called for help and then telephoned for the doctor.
Dr. WILLIAM BOXER MAYNE said he had attended Mr. Smith in the past, the last time being in the early part of last year, but they were only minor matters. He received a telephone call on Saturday morning about 7.30, and on arrival found Mr. Smith dead on the floor; he had then been dead about two hours. There was valvular degeneration in accordance with age, but the other organs were norrnal. He considered that Mr. Smith died from heart failure associated with arterio- sclerosis.
A formal verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was recorded by the Coroner.
The funeral took place, very quietly. in the Parish Churchyard yesterday morning.4 His estate was probated on 14 February 1928 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. The estate was valued at £1,822 18s 5d - to Henry Lucien MALLANDAINE.2
