"This man had a brilliant career in the Royal Navy and was also successful in business. It seems a mystery why he has committed suicide," said the East Lancashire Coroner (Mr. F. Rowland) at a Nelson inquest on Monday on Harry Halstead, B.Sc. (35), radio engineer, of 182. Hallam Road. who was found dead at his home on Friday. William Halstead said his son enjoyed good health before joining the Navy, in which he held a commission. Three weeks ago his son remarked that his mind was diseased. Witness did not take his comment seriously. Along with his wife, witness went to Morecambe for a holiday, leaving his son at home, and being under the impression that Harry was going to Arncllffe for a few days. When witness returned home, he found that had not been away.
Margery Gouldlng, of 184, Hallam Road, said that on Thursday evening she went out with Halstead in his motor car, and they returned at 12-30 a.m. Halstead parked his car near to a tree not far from his home. Next evening she noticed that the car was still in the same place. She went to the house, and found that all the blinds were drawn, and she could not get any response to her knocking. P.C. Hirst spoke to going to the house and having to force the door to gain admission. He found Halstead in his pyjamas lying on the floor in the kitchen with his bead over a gas-ring. The gas supply was exhausted. Near to him was a cardboard box which had contained 24 tablets of phenol-barbitone.
Dr. Haythornthwaite said that he had attended Halstead for neurasthenia. His condition showed depression, and he gave him the tablets for insomnia. The tablets would be exhausted some time ago. Halstead died from carbon monoxide poisoning
