She told Mrs. Leach she had left her purse hom6 and wanted to do some shopping. She also 6aid that Mr. Leach have let her have the money if he had been in. On another occasion she went to a shop in St. James's-street near the G-and Cinema, and said to the manager, " I have come on funny errand. We have booked seats for the second house the Grand, and I have left my purse at home. lam the daughter of Mrs. Parker at the Bull and Butcher. Will you let me have 25., I want to to the Grand 7 " Believing her story, the manager let her have the money.
The Clerk: As a matter of fact, she has no connection with Mrs. Parker?
The Chief Constable said she had not. Continuing, Mr. Smith said the other cases wore a similar character, but he wished to mention one in particular. She went the house of Mr. Kennedy in Laithe-street, and saw the wife. Accused asked her for 45., saying she knew Mr. Kennedy very well and that he had been paying for drinks for her in a publichouse. This was untrue, but was a statement that might have upset the whole household. The Chief Constable said accused had also stated that the child was her sister's. He would not like to believe any of the woman's statements without them being verified, because she had been untruthful. In respect to the case of stealing, accused lodged at the house of complainant, who was a poor woman, and who in order to get a living took in washing. The articles were in a washing order, and had the police not recovered them the woman would have had to pay for them. The accused was wearing them when taken into custody. She had also taken the woman's false teeth and disposed of them.
The Chief Constable said Arthur was a native of Worsthome, and she had worked at the Gorple Mill weaver. She went into service at Nelson, and from there came Burnley, where she entered service. She left after few days, and articles were missed to the value of £lO. In connection with this offence in April, 1921, she was put on probation for twelve months and ordered to pay 15s. costs. In addition the charges mentioned she was reported for having defrauded a trades man in the town January of MA, but that matter was settled by her mother just to prevent the case going to court. The girl had been staying in common lodging-houses and leaving the baby there all night.
"UNTRUTHFUL AND DECEITFUL"
The Clerk: Is there anybody here connected with the girl?
The Cheif Constable: The mother will not come here
Miss Green, probation Officer, said she had found the girl untruthful and deceitful.
The Clerk: With regard to the future, do you think there is a chance, if she is given the opportunity, of the girl going straight?
Miss Green: I could not say anything about that.
Later the Cheif Constable informed the magistrates that the police had been in communication with the Great Harwood mill she had mentioned, and were informed that she had never been in the place.
After a private consultation, the chairman (Mr Hartley Emmott) said the magistrates were very sorry to see the girl in that position, but they felt it would only be an injustice to the public if they did not deal with her in some way as to make her realise what she had done. She would have to go to prison for two months with hard labour in each of the first three cases, the sentences to run concurrenly, and the other cases being taken into consideration. The magistrates could have sent her to prison for twelve months.
Accused: What about my baby?
The Chairman: The baby will be looked after. Mr Call (releiveing officer) will see to that, and probably it will be better looked after while you are away.
The woman: I don't know whether she be looked after better or not.4
