Appears in a newspaper article on on 8 April 1922 at at Burnley, Lancashire, England, MOONLIGHT NIGHT TRAGEDY
Man under Worsthorne Bus

STORY OF FATAL HESITATION
The inquest on Jonathan Wright (34), 34 Water-street, Wosthorne, who was knocked down by a motor 'bus on Monday night and fatally injured, was held at the Victoria Hospital on Wednesday afternoon by the Borough Coroner (Mr. A F. Sutcliffe) and a jury. Mr. Cummings, solicitor, appeared in the interests the driver.

Leah Wright, widow. stated last Monday night husband left home about five minutes past ten to go into the village to inquire about the result of the Parish Council elections. About twenty minutes past ten a message was brought to the house that he had met with an accident. and she met a number of men and a policeman carrying her husband home. She went forward to the Bay Horse Hotel, and requested Mrs. Latham to telephone for Dr McKay. On returning she found her husband was laid on the couch, unconscious. He shortly afterwards became conscious and asked for his wife and his uncle, but he did not say anything about the accident. He again became unconscious recovered and then he said he was sick. Witness replied, “Yes, you will be sick ; you're been knocked down by the Ightenhill chara." He said "Been knocked down.” The doctor arrived about quarter of an hour after after having been sent for and he ordered her husband's removal to the Hospital, where he was taken the same night. Witness noticed that her husband had sustained severe injuries the head.

Police eye witness
P S Thomas Sharpe, stationed at Cliviger, said that about 10-15 on Monday night he was on duty, along with P C Barker, near the reading room in Church-square, Worsthorne. There had been a parish council election that day. Whilst standing he saw a motor ‘bus, driven by Harry Chaloner, of 17 May-street, Burnley, come along Burnley-road, Worsthorne, at a speed of about eight miles an hour. He had one light on the off-side and a red rear light, in accordance with requirements. It was not very dark that night as there was a slight moon, and the schoolroom close by was also lighted up, which reflected light on to the road, so that he could see fairly well. He heard the driver sound his horn just as he was turning into the square from Burnley-road near to the trough. There were a number of people standing in the gutter on the opposite side of the road to the trough, and he saw Wright walking along Entwistle-road, in the square, in the opposite direction to which the ‘bus was travelling. Wright then walked about three yards away from the near side gutter, bearing to his left, as if crossing the road towards the group of people. He hesitated, stopped and seemed to step back again, apparently not knowing which way the ‘bus was going across the square. It was the usual course for the ‘bus to take across the square to let down and pick up passengers near to the Bay Horse Hotel. When he side-stepped, witness saw that Wright did not get clear of the ‘bus and it passed over him. The driver pulled up immediately, and the man was then lying seven feet behind the rear of the ‘bus with his feet towards it. Witnessed estimated the length of the ‘bus to be about 18 feet: it was a 14 seater charabanc, with four rows of seats. Witness went to Wright’s assistance, and found that he was then unconscious, and he had a punctured wound on the back of his head. The driver of the ‘bus assisted to carry Wright home, and witness took a written statement from him, after Wright had been taken to the Hospital, which was about 11-15. In witnesses opinion the driver was perfectly sober. Witness said he examined the ‘bus, and found the near-side mudguard bent down on to the tyre of the left front wheel: the bottom of the identification plate was also bent. The distance between the bottom of the plate and the road was about 9in., the plate being fitted in the middle of the front axle. In the witness’s opinion it was a pure accident, and the driver of the ‘bus was in no way negligent or careless.

By Mr. Cummings: this motor ‘bus plies for hire between Worsthorne and Burnley every afternoon, except Tuesday, so that you have many opportunities of seeing the driver? – I have seen Chaloner driving the ‘bus on an average of once a day since February.

And have you formed an opinion that he is a careful driver? – Yes: I have never seen him neglectful in any way.

Whittam Barker, tape labourer, of 24 Gorple-road, Worsthorne, said that about 10-15 he was among the group of people referred to. He saw the motor ‘bus coming. Deceased stepped forward and backward, as if undecided what to do. Witness did not see the car touch Wright, but when it had passed on he saw him lying in the roadway. The speed of the ‘bus was rather slow. In witness’s opinion the driver could not have avoided the accident, and he was in no way to blame.

Driver’s story
Harry Chaloner, the driver, said he was employed by the Inghtenhill Motors, Old Holme Garage, Inghtenhill Park-lane. He has been a driver for ten years, and had been on that service almost daily between Worsthorne and Burnley since October 18, 1920, though not always driving that particular ‘bus. On Monday night about 10-15, he was driving the ‘bus along Burnley-road towards Worsthorne. He sounded the horn regularly from the entrance to Worsthorne to the square, and on entering the square he sounded the horn again. With the school being lit up, a ray of light was cast along the road, and there was a small moon. He estimated his speed at under ten miles per hour, and the roadway was then clear. He saw Wright first coming down the channel way towards the car, but quite clear of the car. He sounded his horn on seeing deceased who was then about eight yards away. Then Wright suddenly cut in front of the car, as if with the intention of going to the group of people standing on the other side. He hesitated, turned back, and then went forward again. The near-side mudguard struck him and knocked him down. The body of the ‘bus passed over him, but not the wheels. Witness pulled up immediately.

Continuing, he said that on the following morning he examined the ‘bus and found that the near-side mudguard had been bent, and the front identification plate was bent at the corner. The clearance from the bottom of the plate to the ground was roughly, about nine inches, so that the car could not have passed over deceased without the plate striking him. He did all he could to avoid the accident, which was inevitable.

Dr Essie Stuart Smythe, resident lady doctor at the Hospital spoke to Wright suffering from a scalp wound behind the right ear, slight abrasions on both shoulders and on the forehead. There was a swelling on the lower part of the back. He died on Tuesday morning about 1-30, the cause of death being fractured base of the scull.

The Coroner, addressing the jury, said the evidence was quite clear, and it appeared to him that they had no alternative but to come to a verdict of accidental death. There was no suggestion by anybody of negligence on the part of the driver, or that he was in any way to blame.

The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental death” and exonerated the driver from all blame.

Mr Cummings expressed sympathy with the widow and child on behalf of the driver and the motor company. It was a very unfortunate occurrence that the breadwinner should be taken. The accident had caused considerable anxiety to the driver, but under the circumstances he felt it was inevitable.

The Coroner said he would like – and he was sure the jury would like – to be associated with the remarks of Mr Cummings. The jury had come to the conclusion that it was a pure accident and that the driver was in no way to blame.3
