Seven-Year-Old Boy’s Story of River Tragedy
NELSON INQUEST
A VERDICT of "Accidental death” was returned by the East Lancashire Coroner. Mr. F. Rowland, at a Nelson inquest to-day Fred Halstead (8), 18. May-street, Barrowford, who fell into the River Calder last Thursday afternoon, and whose body was recovered on Saturday afternoon, after an extensive search the police and civilians.
Holgate Halstead, loom sweeper, said he was informed at 4.15 last Thursday afternoon that his son had fallen into the river, near Lower Clough Mill. He went there and made a search, but could find no trace of the body. The river at that time was in spate owing to the recent rains.
Keith Millican, seven-year-old boy. of 26. Lee-street, Barrowford. said he went out to play with Halstead last Thursday afternoon. and walked along the river bank to the waterfall near Lower Clough Mill. Fred Halstead, while standing on a stone wall, slipped, but he fell back away from the river on to the grass. Later, slipped again and this time he fell into the river.
"I saw him floating until he got to the weir, and he then went down the stream," the boy sald "I ran down the footpath, but could not see him. and I went and told Mr. Greenwood.
PERIODIC SEARCH
Albert Greenwood, sugar confectioner, of 13. Sandy-lane. Barrowford. said Millican informed him that Fred Halstead had fallen into the river. He searched the river periodically until 3.30 on Saturday afternoon. and he found the body of the boy at a spot about 150 yards below where he fell in. He was fast, face downwards with his arms upstretched. His overcoat was fastened at the top button and the skirt the coat was hanging loosely over his head.
P.C. Jones said the boy had evidently tumbled off the stone wall which had a flat surface. There was 12 feet of grass behind it. A footpath, to which the public had access, was about five feet in width. This generally speaking, was the place where children congregated. The height of the wall from the top of the water was 3ft 6in. and the depth of the water about 5ft. The wall which had a slippery surface was in good condition.
Witness stated that since the time the bov was reported missing, the police at Barrowford, Nelson, Brierfleld, Burnley Borough, Padlham and Whalley, had been busily engaged in searching the river for the boy with the assistance of civilians.
“LIKE PADDLING POOL”
Replying to the Coroner, P.C. Jones said that ordinarily the river was only a slight stream, with about 2ft. of water in it, and did not constitute a danger to children. The Coroner: More like a paddling pool than anything else?— Witness: Yes. it is only in exceptional circumstances that the river gets into spate.
Returning his verdict, the Coroner said that so far as he could see, this was not really an unsuitable place for children to use as a playground. The weather, however, had been abnormal, and from a turgid, peaceful stream, the river had become violent and tempestuous, and the boy, falling in, had been carried away by the current.
The Coroner expressed his gratitude to the police for photographs taken by them which, he said, had enabled him to visualise the whole scene. He also desired to acknowledge. as he knew the parents would, the assistance rendered by the whole of the police and by civillans in making this extenrlvc search for the boy.3
