"Accidental death" was the verdict returned at an inquest last Saturday at Langho, on Albert Halstead (17), apprentieo motor mechanic, 3, Park Gate-row, Salesbury, who received fatal injuries in a motor accident at Billington last Thursday night. Halstead was riding a motor cycle, which collided with a lorry.
Mr. T. N. S. Rooac (Burnley) represented the parents, and Mr J Cummings (Burnley) the owners and the driver of the lorry. The Coroner (Mr. B. Rowland) said that as the result of asking the newspapers to publish an appeal for witnesses two had come forward.
Margaret Eleanor Grundy, 1, Railwayview, Billington, said that as the lorry going towaids Whalley passed her she heard a crash. The driver of the lorry stopped and asked her if she had been thrown from the motor cycle. She saw a dog coming from behind the lorry. She had not seen it before. John Thomas Harrison, 7, Swainbank-street, Burnley, the lorry driver, said he was on his own side of the road. The driver of the motor cycle seemed to lose control and ran straight into the lorry. He did not see a dog. He had not his headlights on, so it was impossible for Halstead to have been dazzled. The motor cycle was travelling at a moderate speed.
The Coroner said it might have been the dog which caused Halstead to swerve, or it may have been a sudden attack of dizziness which caused him to lose control.
We understand that the deceased is the son of Mr. J. W. Halstead, the former Lowerhousecricketer.²
