Among the casualties resulting from the sinking of H.M.S. Prince of Wales is Able Seamon Norman Pilkington (aged 23), of Brook Street, Earby. He is officially reported missing, and a telegram to this effect was received by his wife last Friday morning.
Able Seaman Pilkington joined tho navy about 12 months ago and was previously employed as a weaver at Barnoldswick, his native town. He took part in the successful action against the Bismarck, and witnessed the historic meeting of Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt which produced the Atlantic Charter.
A keen footballer, he played with the Barnoldswick Town and Bancroft Clubs as a half-back, and for a brief period served on the Town Committee.
A sportsman, in the truest sense of the term he was widely popular in the district.⁴
