Obituary of John Westwood RIDEHALGH: on 4 June 1954 at Lancaster, Lancashire, England, Stonemason’s death
The Lancaster Coroner (Mr. J. H. Jellyman), at an inquest in the Town Hall on Friday, recorded the cause of death of John Westwood Ridehalgh (73). Morecambe Road, Lancaster, on April 15 as cancer of the wind-pipe, pneumoconiosis (dust disease in the lung) being a contributory factor.
Mrs. Annie Hand, of Morecambe Road, said that Mr. Ridehalgh was her father. He had been a stone-mason and had helped in the building of Liverpool Cathedral, He had been in good health until, some time ago, he developed a bad cough. A Birmingham doctor told him in 1944 he should retire as he had bronchitis and perhaps silicosis. He did in fact retire, to Lancaster, on a £2-a-week pension from a Leeds firm.
In March of this year his cough became worse and he was forced to stay in bed. On April 15, Dr. Alexander, who had visited him dally, said that his heart had become very weak. That evening Mr. Ridehalgh died.
The Coroner said that by a post-mortem examination . Dr. Rickards had diagnosed the cause of death as cancer of the windpipe and a further examination by the Ministry of Pensions’ pneumoconiosis panel had established that pneumoconiosis was a contributory cause.9 His estate was given Letters of Administration on 3 July 1954 at London, England. The estate was valued at £680 15s 1d - to Annie HAND.11
