George was the son of Mr & Mrs J.M. Olstead of Oberon, Manitoba. He was born at Oberon April 13, 1916. He attended elementary school at Oberon, completing his collegiate studies at Neepawa. George graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1936 with a Batchelor of Science Degree. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, graduating as a Pilot Officer and Instructor. He and Pilot Officer H.K. Corbett from Fredrickson N.B. were accidentally killed while flying Battle Aircraft (NO: 1304). The plane crashed into Sharbot Lake four miles northwest of Snow Road, Ontario. They were taking part in a navigation exercise October 14, 1939. George was the first casualty of the Second World War from Neepawa and District.
Olstead Lake (64 O/11) was named after him 1975/04/18.3
