Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon an inquest was held at the Todmorden Town Hall on the body of Thomas Kaye, of 84, Industrial Street, 65 years of age, an engineer and fireman, who died at 10-15 on Sunday night. Deceased left home at 4-30 a.m. Wednesday, the 28th February, to go to his work at Millsteads Mill, Castle Street. When he got there, he looked to his fires, and then proceeded to the rear of the boiler-house to open the door of the beaming room, used by the tacklers. He was carrying a lamp in his hand, but when he got outside the lamp went out, and he fell into the river Calder, which adjoins the mill premises. He climbed out by means of a steam pipe projection from the wall of the river. On March 5 he consulted Dr. H. Thorp, who attended him until his death on Sunday evening.
At the inquest Mr. Greenwood Baldwin, Stansfield Road, was foreman of the jury. Mr. James Chapman, solicitor, Manchester, represented deceased’s employers, Messrs. Whipp Bros, and Todd.
Georgina Kaye, 84, Industrial Street, said her husband told her that on the last day in February he fell into the Watergate. He said he had walked in and alighted on his feet, and that it was some time before he could get out; that he had gone to open the beam room door and that the wind blew out the naked lamp he was carrying. He complained of feeling dazed and funny, and that it had given him a right shock. She could make nothing of him. At 8 o’clock he went to bed. —The Coroner; In what way could you make nothing of him? —Witness: He seemed bit wrong, could not speak his words right, and I could not make any sense of him at all. He seemed sleepy and dazed. On the Wednesday afternoon the doctor was sent for as he went worse, getting a bit rough, and never gave over talking. He never complained of anything besides a good shaking, and there were no marks on him. Deceased had only worked for the firm two months, having been at Astin and Barker’s, Salford, for about 20 years.
John Thos. Wilkinson, 10, Woodhouse Rd., foreman overlooker at Millsteods Mill, said he saw deceased in the boiler house about 5-30 a.m. on February 28th, and he looked strange. He told about falling into the river as was going to the engine house, that he was not hurt, only wet. It was not necessary for him to go that way, he could have gone over the boiler and across a gangway that connected the engine house and boiler house. The way he went was outside the building altogether. between the boiler house and river where the road at the narrowest point was 11 feet 10 inches wide. The beam room was between the engine and boiler houses and he had to unfasten' the door every morning. Witness advised him to go home, and he went just after the engine started, about 6. He would come on duty about 5. —In reply to a juror witness said deceased would drop 10ft. 4in. There was no fence where he fell.
Dr. Harold Thorp said deceased first called at his surgery on Monday afternoon, March 5th, about 2-30, and was in a dazed condition. Witness could not understand what he wanted to tell him, but gave him some medicine. told him to go home to bed, and send for him if he was worse. On Wednesday afternoon. March 7th. witness was sent for, and found deceased more incoherent in his speech, and irritable, a condition which continued until he became more comatose on 18th March, from which day he was practically unconscious till his death on April 1st. After hearing of the fall he examined deceased. but there were no signs of injury. A post mortem examination revealed a very emaciated body, with general venus, and other congestion and thrombosis of the lateral sinews.. There was nothing abnormal elsewhere and no sign of injury to the head. This condition had come on during the last week of his life, and was probably a result of the heart not doing its work properly, which a shock might account for, but he did not care to say definitely that it had done. —Mr. Chapman; In the case of a man falling 10ft. would you expect to find some external marks? —Witness: I should not have thought he would get up at all.
The jury decided that death was due to the causes suggested by the doctor, brought about by shock from a fall on the 28th Feb., the fall being accidental.11
