CORONER'S VERDICT
An inquest was held by the City Coroner (Mr..A. N. Barnett) yesterday afternoon at Coroners' Court; Queen's Square, on the body of Emily Rebecca Halsted, aged 24 years, wiho died at the Prince Alfred Hospital on Tuesday morning last.
Clara Owen, a single woman, living at Darling Point Road, said she knew deceased by the name of Emily Wilson. She had known her for 12 months. She was a servant at the same place as witness. She kept company with a young man. She told witness In December she was in trouble. She said, "She would fix herself and It would be all right." She added that she had successfully done this same thing on a former occasion. Witness told her she was silly. Deceased left her employment on Thursday week, and had done something two days before. She told witness she was "all right now," and would be right in two days. Witness added, "She was all right when she left our place," but she was afterwards in pain. She did not then think she was out of trouble, and re-marked, "It can't be helped." Then she went to bed and remained there till Thursday morning. Witness did not send for a doctor. Witness did not remain with her on Tuesday, but she did on Wednesday night, when a child was born. Witness was the only per-, son, present at the time— It was a quarter past seven at night. Witness did not tell a soul about it. Her mistress made in-quiries about her. Deceased told her mistress that she had fallen off the copper, and would be right in a couple of days. On the Saturday witness received a note from deceased.
Dr. Harold Molesworth, the resident doctor of Prince Alfred Hospltai, said the deceased was admitted to that institution at 10 o'clock on Saturday night. She told the hospital authorities that she had had a. mishap ten days before. Her pulse was quick, and her temperature 104. Internally she was In a very bad condition. The next) morning the tem perature was 106. and she was evidently suf-fering from septicaemia from which she died on the following Tuesday.
Dr. Palmer, who made a post-mortem, gave evidence to the effect that deceased died from septicaemia. He attributed the sep-ticaemia to the use of mechanical Instru-ments in unskilled hands.
Mrs. Sarah Poole, sister of deceased, said she had never suspected the deceased was In trouble. On Thursday week she came to witness' house at Newtown and told her she was not well. A young man called on Friday and had an interview with the deceased, Witness visited her on Sunday night, when she was unconscious.
The Coroner (to witness); When did you first become aware that the girl was in trouble?— After she left our house. When I had spoken to her about it she denied it alto-gether. When the young man came in the evening I asked him certain questions, which he denied.
Francis Gilbert Halsted, a draper's asslstent. said he married deceased on Saturday, the 3rd inst., at 9 o'clock In the morning, in Pitt-street; He used to take her about twice a week. That was two or three months ago.. She told witness, on Sunday, the 25th that she had used a certain Instrument on herself. He next saw her on the following Thursday, when he went to see her. She told him she was going to leave her service, and was going to stay with her sister. On Friday she told him a chemist had given her a draught after the mishap. He saw her at her sister's on Friday evening, when she was In bed. Witness did say de-ceased had told him she had fallen from a copper.
The Coroner (to witness) : You need not answer these questions unless you like. Did you advise her to use anything? — I did not.
Did you tell the dootor she had fallen off the copper?— Yes. Did you mention that as a reason why she was ill? - Yes:
Did you tell him that she was your wife?— I did. Arid she was not. And afterwards you married her ?— Yes.
You were with her at the hospital on the 26th when she died?— Yes.
It was at her request that you married her on the Saturday night?— Yes.
The Coroner found that deceased had died from septicaemia, the result of a mishap brought on by mechanical means used by herself.1
