Appears in a newspaper article on on 25 May 1929 at at Leeds, Yorkshire, FATAL CHASE ON GLASS ROOF
LEEDS CORONER CENSURES OTLEY BOY.
Returning a verdict of "Accidental death” at a Leeds inquest, yesterday, on Clifford Holstead (14), apprenticed leather currier, of North Street, Otley, who died yesterday in Leeds Infirmary from shock following injuries received when he fell through a skylight, the jury suggested that the firm, Messrs. Sinclairs, Printing Works, North Street, Otley, on whose premises the accident happened, should take greater precautions. The jury also said they wished a boy, Hubert A. Jackson, of Court House Street, Otley, to be censured for the way in which he gave his evidence
Doris Holstead (12) said that on Tuesday her brother, some other children, including Jackson, and herself got in the yard of Sinclairs’ premises by opening the padlock of the gate with a key. They climbed to the glass roof, and Jackson and her brother started calling each other names.
Jackson began chasing her brother over the glass, and in some way touched him, causing Clifford to fall through the glass roof into the works.
Jackson, giving evidence, denied chasing the boy and touching him. He said they often climbed to trie roof for balls. On this occasion they had gone on to the roof for a bit of fun, and he was about four yards away from him all the time.
The Deputy Coroner (Mr. J. B. Clarke) : They ail deserve a good hiding.
A representative of the firm stated that police notices were posted up, and barbed wire was fixed prevent anyone trespassing.
The Deputy Coroner (to the firm's representative) : It is a serious thing that a child like this should be allowed to play about on a roof where there is any danger to their lives. I not know what the jury’s impression is, but I am not at ail pleased with it.
Addressing Hubert Jackson, the Deputy Coroner said that he quite agreed with what the jury had said. "I think it is no credit to you,” continued Mr. Clarke, "for giving your evidence in the way you have. It is no credit to a boy your age to have been chasing about on a roof.
"I am inclined to agreed with the evidence which the boy’s sister has given, that you were chasing this boy, and that you did something which led to his falling through this root. I do not know whether you pushed him or not, but hope you will take it as a very serious warning fo look after your conduct in future, and to be a little more serious when you are giving evidence.”.3
